Message us on WhatsAppImmobiliser vs alarm vs tracker: what each one does
These three get mixed up because they all sit under car security. LockCAR designs and makes immobilisers, GPS trackers and 4G dashcams in the UK, so here is a straight comparison of what each one protects, where each one stops, and how to combine them.
- Prevent
- Alert
- Locate
The difference in one table
| System | Its job | When it acts | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immobiliser | Stops the engine starting without a recognised key or second proof | At every start | Make a noise or show where the car is |
| Alarm | Makes a noise when someone opens or disturbs the car | When the car is disturbed | Stop the engine being started |
| GPS tracker | Shows where the vehicle is | Once the vehicle moves | Stop the vehicle being taken |
| Dashcam | Records what happens around the car | While it is recording | Stop the engine starting |
Many cars already have a factory immobiliser and a factory alarm. The real question is which layers you add, and that depends on two things: whether the car is keyless, and where it sleeps at night.
Which one stops the car being driven away?
Only the immobiliser. An alarm can scare a thief off, but if nobody reacts, the car still starts. A tracker helps after the theft, when the car has already gone.
An immobiliser acts before the car moves. That is why it is the layer to get right first.
Your car’s factory immobiliser trusts the key. A relay attack can make it believe the key is beside the car, and a relay attack opens the doors normally, so the alarm may never sound. That is the gap an added immobiliser closes.
If you are choosing between an alarm upgrade and an immobiliser, choose the immobiliser first. An alarm needs someone to react. An immobiliser works when nobody is watching.
Why the layers work best together
- PreventAn immobiliser makes starting the engine the hard part.
- RecordA dashcam keeps footage of what happened on the road.
- LocateA GPS tracker helps when a car is towed or lifted away, which no immobiliser can stop.
- One fittingLockCAR dashcam systems put the immobiliser and the dashcam in together, with fitting included.
What each layer does in real thefts
Walking through how a theft actually happens shows why one layer is rarely enough.
- A thief relays your keyless fob from the hallway
- The car unlocks as if you had opened it, so the alarm stays quiet. The factory immobiliser accepts the relayed key. An added immobiliser keeps the engine blocked, because the relay does not carry its second proof.
- A cloned key is used at night
- The factory immobiliser treats the clone as yours. A LockCAR immobiliser still asks for your TAG, ring, watch or PIN.
- Your keys are taken in a burglary
- The car key alone is not enough if your TAG is kept somewhere else, or if you chose the PIN version.
- A thief breaks a window
- The alarm sounds and may scare them off. If they stay and try to start the car, the immobiliser decides whether the engine runs.
- The car is lifted onto a truck
- No immobiliser or alarm stops this. A GPS tracker shows where the car goes.
- Another driver causes a crash and denies it
- Only the dashcam helps here, with footage of what happened on the road.
LockCAR systems that combine them
Start with the immobiliser, then add what you want on top.
| System | Immobiliser | Dashcam | GPS tracker | Price fitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fob (TAG) immobiliser | Yes | No | No | £249 |
| LockCar One | Yes | Yes | No | £450 |
| LockCar One Plus 4G | Yes | 4G dashcam | Yes | £499 |
| LockCar Duo RH | Yes | Dual-camera | No | £550 |
| LockCar Duo RH Plus 4G | Yes | Dual-camera 4G | Yes | £699 |
The LockCar One Plus 4G is highlighted because it is the lowest-priced system that covers all three jobs: it stops the start, records the road and shows where the car is.
Questions about alarms, trackers and immobilisers
Does an immobiliser replace an alarm?
No. They do different jobs. Many cars already have a factory alarm, and an immobiliser adds protection at the moment of starting.
Can an immobiliser track my car?
No. For location you need a GPS tracker, such as the one in the LockCar One Plus 4G.
Does a tracker stop theft?
No. It helps you find the car after it moves. It does not stop the engine starting.
Which should I buy first?
If your car is keyless, start with an immobiliser, because it acts before the car moves. Add a tracker and dashcam if you also want location and footage.
Is a dashcam the same as a tracker?
No. A dashcam records video. The Plus 4G systems add a GPS tracker to the dashcam and immobiliser.
Do insurers ask for a particular device?
Some do, especially on high-risk cars. Check your policy wording before you buy anything, because a request for a tracker is not met by an immobiliser.
Will an alarm go off during a relay attack?
Usually not. A relay attack unlocks the car the same way your fob does, so the car has no reason to sound the alarm.
