Message us on WhatsAppBest security for keyless cars: how to stop relay theft
Keyless entry is handy for you and for thieves, because the fob never has to leave your pocket. LockCAR makes CAN immobilisers in Birmingham built around one idea: no fob, no start. Here is what works against relay theft, what does not, and what to fit.
- No fob, no start
- Fitted from £249
- No subscription
How relay theft works on a keyless car
A keyless car unlocks and starts when the fob is close. In a relay attack, one thief stands near your house with a device that picks up the fob’s signal and passes it to a second device beside the car.
The car believes the fob is there. It unlocks, the factory immobiliser accepts the key, and the engine starts. Nothing is broken, so there is often no sign of a break-in and no alarm.
The weak point is simple: the car trusts the key signal, and the key signal can be carried.
Keyless cars are not all the same. Some fobs go to sleep when they stop moving, and some cars let you switch keyless entry off. Your handbook will tell you what yours does.
Relay theft is quiet, which is why it suits thieves working on driveways at night. It also leaves the car looking untouched until you go out in the morning.
What works against relay theft, and what does not
Works
- An added immobiliser that needs a TAG, ring, watch or PIN
- A signal-blocking pouch for the fob, used every time
- Switching off keyless entry, if your car allows it
- A steering lock as a visible extra
Does not work on its own
- The factory immobiliser, which accepts the relayed key
- An alarm, since the car opens as if you had opened it
- A tracker, which acts after the car has gone
- Keeping the fob in a drawer by the front door
The left list costs a thief time and leaves no simple workaround. The right list either does nothing against a relay, or helps only once the car has gone.
Why a second check beats the relay
- The relay only carries the car keyA LockCAR immobiliser asks for something else before the engine can start.
- Hands-free stays hands-freeWith a TAG, smart ring or smartwatch, you keep the keyless feel.
- Or nothing to carryThe PIN code version uses a sequence on your steering wheel buttons.
- Pay onceLockCAR immobilisers need no subscription.
That is what no fob, no start means in practice: the relay brings your car key, but not the TAG, ring, watch or PIN.
Which LockCAR immobiliser suits a keyless car
All four keep the engine blocked until you prove it’s you.
| Immobiliser | How you disarm it | Hands-free | Kit price | Fitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fob (TAG), IC3262 | Carry the TAG | Yes | £139 | £249 |
| Smart ring | Wear the paired ring | Yes | £149 | Ask us |
| Smartwatch | Wear your smartwatch, no extra fob | Yes | £160 | Ask us |
| PIN code | Enter your sequence on the steering wheel buttons | With optional TAG | £189 | £299 |
Keep your TAG off the same ring as your car key. If both are stolen together, the thief has both proofs.
The ring and smartwatch keep the hands-free feel of a keyless car. The PIN code version suits drivers who would rather carry nothing extra at all.
A keyless security routine in three steps
Good habits plus a second check cover the relay gap from both sides.
At home
Keep the fob, and any spare fob, in a signal-blocking pouch, well away from the front door and outside walls.
When you park
Check the car has locked. Leave nothing on show, and fit a steering lock if the car sleeps on the street.
When you drive
With a LockCAR immobiliser fitted, have your TAG, ring or watch with you, or enter your PIN, and the engine is free to start.
Questions from keyless car owners
Are keyless cars easier to steal?
They can be, because relay theft only works on cars that unlock and start when the fob is near. A second check takes that advantage away.
Can I turn off keyless entry?
Some cars let you, through the settings menu or a button sequence. Your handbook or dealer will tell you. You lose the convenience, so many drivers add a second immobiliser instead.
Will a LockCAR immobiliser change how I start my car?
You still use your keyless fob as normal. The engine stays blocked until the LockCAR immobiliser sees your TAG, ring or watch, or you enter your PIN.
Does it stop the doors being opened?
No. An immobiliser stops the engine starting. Keep valuables out of sight, because a relay can still open the doors.
Which keyless cars does it fit?
LockCAR immobilisers work on 12 V and 24 V vehicles. Enter your registration in the Vehicle CHECK to confirm yours.
How much does it cost?
A fitted TAG immobiliser costs £249 and a fitted PIN immobiliser costs £299. The smart ring kit is £149 and the smartwatch kit is £160.
Do spare fobs need protecting too?
Yes. A spare fob near a door can be relayed just like the main one. Keep it in a signal-blocking pouch or well away from the outside walls.
