Message us on WhatsAppCan thieves bypass a car immobiliser? How it happens and how to stop it
A factory immobiliser stops hot-wiring well, but thieves have moved on to methods that fool it rather than fight it. LockCAR builds CAN immobilisers in Birmingham to close that gap. Here is how the common methods work, in plain terms, and what stops each one.
- Relay theft
- Key cloning
- A second check
Can thieves bypass a car immobiliser? Five ways thieves get round a factory immobiliser
- Relay attack
- Two people with radio kit pass your keyless fob’s signal from your house to the car. The car thinks the key is beside it, unlocks and starts.
- Key programming
- Thieves get into the car and use diagnostic kit to code a new key to the immobiliser. The car then treats it as yours.
- Wiring attacks
- Some thieves reach the car’s wiring from outside and send messages that imitate a genuine key.
- Stolen or spare keys
- A burglary, a lost key or a spare left with a previous owner gives the thief the real thing.
- Towing or lifting
- No immobiliser stops a car being loaded onto a truck.
Relay attacks and cloned keys need nothing to be broken, so a car can be gone before anyone notices.
Why these methods work
Each method gives the car what it is waiting for: a key it recognises. The factory immobiliser is doing its job. It just has no way to tell your key from a copy, a relay or a fake message.
That is why the answer is a second check that has nothing to do with the car key.
No immobiliser can promise that a car will never be stolen. The aim is to make yours slower and harder to take than the next one.
Think of a front door with a good lock and a spare key under the mat. The lock works. The trouble is that the thief already has a key, so the answer is a second lock they have no key for.
What stops each method
- Relay attackA LockCAR immobiliser keeps the engine blocked until it sees your TAG, ring or watch, or your PIN. A relayed car key is not enough.
- New or cloned keyA key coded by thieves does not carry the second proof either.
- Stolen keysKeep your TAG apart from the car key, or choose the PIN version, so a stolen key ring is not enough.
- TowingA GPS tracker, as in the LockCar One Plus 4G, helps when a car is moved without being driven.
Each answer targets a different method, so the strongest set-up uses more than one of them.
If your car is stolen anyway
No device can promise a car will never be taken. If it happens, act quickly and calmly.
Report it to the police
Do it straight away and get a crime reference number. Give them the registration, make, model and colour, and any distinctive marks.
Tell your insurer
Most policies ask you to report a theft quickly. Have the crime reference number and your policy number ready.
Share any location or footage
If your car has a GPS tracker or a dashcam, pass what you have to the police. Never try to recover the car yourself.
Simple habits that help today
Do
- Keep keyless fobs in a signal-blocking pouch at home
- Switch off keyless entry if your car allows it
- Park where the car is seen and lit
- Add an immobiliser that asks for something the key cannot give
Avoid
- Leaving keys near the front door
- Keeping your TAG on the same ring as the car key
- Assuming the factory immobiliser covers relay theft
Habits on their own will not stop a determined thief, but they remove the easy chances. Combined with a second immobiliser, they leave very little for a relay kit to work with.
Questions about how thieves beat immobilisers
Can a relay attack beat an immobiliser?
It can beat a factory one, because the factory system accepts the relayed key signal. The relay does not supply the TAG, ring, watch or PIN that a LockCAR immobiliser asks for.
Does a signal-blocking pouch stop relay theft?
It blocks the fob’s signal while the fob is inside, so a relay kit has nothing to pass on. It only helps if you use it every time.
Can thieves steal a car without the key at all?
Yes, by towing or lifting it, or by attacking the wiring. That is why many drivers pair an immobiliser with a tracker.
Is a PIN immobiliser harder to beat than a fob?
A PIN is in your head, so it cannot be stolen with your keys. A fob is hands-free, but it has to be kept apart from the car key.
Are keyless cars more at risk?
Keyless entry and start are what relay attacks rely on, so keyless cars gain most from a second check.
Will a LockCAR immobiliser make my car impossible to steal?
No device can promise that. It stops the engine starting with a relayed or cloned car key alone, which removes the quickest methods.
Should I try to stop a thief myself?
No. Do not confront anyone or try to recover the car. Call the police and let them use any tracker or footage you have.
