Office for National Statistics figures put the West Midlands second among English regions for vehicle theft, at 11.1 recorded thefts per 1,000 people. Only London is higher. Birmingham consistently appears among the worst affected cities in the country.
What makes it difficult to guard against is that most modern thefts involve no broken glass and no triggered alarm. Your car’s built-in security was not designed for this.
Factory immobilisers were built to stop hot-wiring, and they do that well. They were not built for a world where the key can be reached through a front door. When a relay device amplifies your fob signal, the car’s security system is not defeated so much as satisfied. It believes the key is present and does exactly what it was designed to do.
An aftermarket immobiliser adds a separate layer that has nothing to do with key signals. Depending on which system you choose, it either holds the engine circuit open until your paired tag is inside the vehicle, or blocks the start command until you enter a code on the car’s own buttons. Either way, a captured key signal gets a thief a comfortable seat and nothing else.
Our tag systems work at circuit level and make no data connection to the vehicle network, so they operate alongside your car’s electronics rather than through them. Our CAN-IMMO works the other way, communicating on the vehicle network so that your code can be entered on the factory buttons with nothing extra to carry. Should I choose a tag or a PIN code?
A tag disarms the system as you walk up, so there is nothing to do before you drive and nothing to remember. A PIN system means carrying nothing at all, but you enter a short sequence on the car’s own buttons each time you start. Our CAN-IMMO is the PIN option, and it also accepts a wireless trust tag or the app if you change your mind later.
Will fitting an immobiliser affect my car’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers, so if your vehicle is under warranty it is worth a call to your dealer before you book. We can tell you exactly what will be connected and where, which is usually all they want to know. Our tag systems make no data connection to the vehicle network at all, which is often the point a dealer asks about first.
How long does installation take?
Most installations are done in under an hour. Before we leave we set up the app, pair your tag or programme your code, and walk you through how everything works, including service mode for when the car goes to a garage.
Can a relay attack get past a LockCar system?
A relay attack works by amplifying your key fob signal. Our systems do not respond to key signals. Even with your original key and full access to the cabin, the engine will not start without the paired tag in range, the correct code entered, or an authorised command through the app.
What if I lose the tag or forget the code?
Spare tags are paired at fitting and we recommend keeping one at home. On CAN-IMMO you can also release the vehicle with the trust tag or from the app, so a forgotten sequence does not leave you stranded. Either way, call us and we will sort it.
Is there a subscription?
The core immobiliser works without one. A subscription is only needed for cloud storage, 4G remote access and live camera on the ONE Plus. The ic326, IC3ST and CAN-IMMO work fully without any subscription.
Will my insurer recognise it?
Policies vary. Some insurers reduce a premium for an aftermarket immobiliser, some do not, and a few only recognise specific accredited products. Ask yours before booking and we will supply whatever documentation they want to see.
What happens if something goes wrong afterwards?
You call the same person who fitted it. There is no customer service team and no helpline, just the engineer who knows your vehicle and what was installed on it.
