Message us on WhatsAppDoes a car immobiliser lower your insurance?
Insurers ask about security when you get a quote, so it is a fair question. LockCAR, the Birmingham maker of CAN immobilisers, explains how insurers treat immobilisers, what the Thatcham categories mean, and what to check before you count on a discount.
- Insurer rules vary
- Declare what you fit
- No subscription
The short answer
Sometimes. Each insurer sets its own rules. Many quote forms ask whether the car has a factory immobiliser, a Thatcham device or another device, and price the risk from there. Some insurers ask for a specific type of device on high-risk cars.
An immobiliser can count in your favour, but only your insurer can tell you whether it changes your premium. What every driver can do is lower the chance of a theft claim in the first place, which protects your no-claims record whatever the price.
Insurers price risk on many things: the car, where it is kept, your driving history and its security. Security is one factor among several, so an immobiliser alone rarely tells the whole story.
The rest of this page explains how the categories work, what to ask your insurer and why stopping the start is worth doing either way.
What the Thatcham categories mean
| Category | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Category 1 | An electronic alarm and immobiliser together |
| Category 2 | An electronic immobiliser |
| Category S5 | A tracker with driver recognition |
| Category S7 | Stolen vehicle tracking |
LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification, and we will publish the details when a certificate is issued.
The categories are a shared language between insurers and security makers. A device either holds a certificate for a category or it does not, so ask to see it.
Categories cover alarms, immobilisers and trackers, whether fitted at the factory or added later. Your handbook or the device paperwork shows any category.
What to tell your insurer
- Declare what you fitMost insurers want to know about changes to the car, including added security.
- Use the insurer’s wordsIf a policy asks for a specific category, check that a device meets it before you buy.
- Keep the paperworkKeep your invoice from the installer in case your insurer asks.
- Trackers and immobilisers are differentA request for a tracker is not met by an immobiliser, and the other way round.
If you are unsure how to word it, describe the device plainly: what it is, who made it, who fitted it and when.
Three questions to ask your insurer before you fit anything
Does my policy ask for a specific device?
Some policies name a category, such as a tracker for high-risk cars. If yours does, only a device in that category meets it.
Do you want to know about added security?
Ask how to declare it, whether it changes your quote, and whether they need anything from you.
Does it matter who fits it?
Some insurers care how a device is fitted. Ask what proof they want, and keep your installer’s invoice.
Write down the answers with the date and the name of the person you spoke to.
Some insurers also ask where the car is kept overnight. A garage or a driveway can matter as much as a device.
Why fit one even without a discount
- Fewer chances for a theft claim
- A car that will not start with a relayed or cloned key alone is harder to take.
- Your no-claims bonus stays safe
- A theft claim can cost you the bonus you have built up.
- It covers the gap in keyless cars
- The factory immobiliser trusts the key signal. A second check does not.
- Paid once
- No subscription, so the cost does not grow year after year.
Treat the premium and the protection as two separate questions. Your insurer sets one. The other is up to you.
Fit it for the protection, and treat any discount as a bonus.
Questions about immobilisers and insurance
Will a LockCAR immobiliser reduce my premium?
We cannot promise that, because each insurer sets its own rules. Tell your insurer what you have fitted and ask whether it changes your quote.
Where does Thatcham certification come in?
Thatcham Research tests security devices against its categories. LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification, and no certificate has been issued yet.
Do I have to tell my insurer about an aftermarket immobiliser?
Check your policy wording. Many insurers ask you to declare changes to the car, and it is safer to tell them.
My insurer wants a Thatcham tracker. Will an immobiliser do?
No. If the policy names a tracker category, only a device in that category meets it. An immobiliser is a separate layer.
Does a factory immobiliser count?
Many quote forms ask whether the immobiliser is factory fitted, a Thatcham device or another device, so answer exactly as your car is.
Can fitting an immobiliser cause problems with my insurance?
Not telling your insurer about changes can. Declare what you fit and keep your invoice.
Does an immobiliser help on a high-risk model?
It makes the car harder to start with a relayed or cloned key. If your insurer asks for a specific device on a high-risk car, check whether an immobiliser meets that condition before you buy.
