An aftermarket immobiliser is a second immobiliser fitted after the car leaves the factory. LockCAR designs and makes them in Birmingham. This page explains what one adds, who benefits most, and how fitting works from start to finish.

Factory immobiliser vs a LockCAR immobiliser
The aftermarket system does not replace the factory one. It adds a check the factory one cannot make.

LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification, and we will publish the details when a certificate is issued. Tell your insurer about any device you add.
The factory system stays in charge of your key. The LockCAR immobiliser sits alongside it and adds one condition of its own before the engine can run.
What a second immobiliser changes, and what it does not
Day to day, very little changes. You unlock and drive as before. The only difference comes at the moment of starting: the engine waits until the LockCAR immobiliser sees your TAG, ring or watch, or until you enter your PIN.
For a thief, almost everything changes. The tools that beat a factory system, such as relay kits and key programmers, give the car a key it believes. They do not give it the second proof, so the engine stays blocked.

Who an aftermarket immobiliser suits

If none of these describe your car, the factory immobiliser may be enough for now. Look again if you move, change car or switch to a keyless model, because the risk changes with each.

Which LockCAR immobiliser to choose
- Fob (TAG): £139 kit, £249 fitted
- Carry the TAG and the engine is free to start. Keep it apart from your car key.
- Smart ring: £149 kit
- Wear the paired ring. Nothing extra in your pocket.
- Smartwatch: £160 kit
- Wear the smartwatch, with no extra fob to carry.
- PIN code: £189 kit, £299 fitted
- Enter your sequence on the steering wheel buttons. Nothing to carry or lose, with an optional TAG.

Questions about aftermarket immobilisers
Is an aftermarket immobiliser worth it on a new car?
New cars with keyless entry are open to relay attacks, because the factory system trusts the key signal. A second check adds protection the car does not have from new.
Can I fit it myself?
LockCAR immobilisers are fitted by approved installers. Installers who want to fit them can register for training.
Do I keep my normal key?
Yes. You use your car key as before. The immobiliser adds its own check on top.
Where is it fitted?
At your home, at work or at an installation centre, by a LockCAR approved installer.
Does it work on vans?
LockCAR immobilisers work on 12 V and 24 V vehicles. Run the Vehicle CHECK to confirm yours.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Tell your insurer about any security device you add and ask whether it counts. LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification, and no certificate has been issued yet. Read more on immobilisers and insurance.
Will I notice the immobiliser day to day?
Only at the moment of starting. With a TAG, ring or watch you just need it with you. With the PIN version you enter a short sequence on the steering wheel buttons.
