How keyless BMW theft works — and how LockCAR stops it
Three common methods defeat the factory system. None of them can close a hidden LockCAR relay.
Relay attack
One device near your front door picks up the signal from your BMW key inside the house and passes it to a second device beside the car. The car believes the key is present, unlocks and allows the engine to start. A LockCAR immobiliser blocks the engine start because its own tag or PIN is not present.
CAN injection
Thieves reach the car’s data network from outside — often behind a headlight or bumper — and send fake “key is valid” messages. The factory system accepts them. A LockCAR relay sits on a separate circuit and stays closed.
OBD key programming
The diagnostic port under the dashboard is used to register a new key. Again, the factory system is defeated, but the LockCAR immobiliser still blocks the engine until the correct tag or PIN is used.
Check your owner’s manual or ask a BMW dealer whether keyless entry can be switched off or limited on your model. Combined with a Faraday box at home and a hidden immobiliser, it removes the easiest route in.

Why isn’t the BMW factory immobiliser enough?
The factory immobiliser checks that a valid key is present, but it relies on radio signals and the car’s internal network. Relay attacks fake the key’s presence, and CAN injection or OBD programming work through the car’s electronics.
