Message us on WhatsAppLockCar CAN-IMMO on a BMW M4: what the video shows and why it costs £299 fitted
Three minutes inside a BMW M4 fitted with LockCar CAN-IMMO. The engine stays blocked until the driver proves who they are, by a PIN on the steering wheel buttons, the app or a trusted smartwatch. Supplied and fitted for £299.
- Vehicle: BMW M4,
- Unit: LockCar CAN-IMMO
- Price: £299 fitted
- Fees: none
A performance BMW is exactly the kind of car thieves target with relay boxes and key programmers, because the factory system trusts any key that answers correctly. In this clip CAN-IMMO adds a second question the thief cannot answer. Below we walk through the video moment by moment, explain what the unit is doing on the car’s network at each step, and show why a module that does this much costs £299 with fitting included.
- The engine will not run while the app shows IMMOBILISED, even with the genuine key inside
- PIN entered on the BMW’s own steering wheel buttons, with no keypad added
- A paired smartwatch can act as the trusted device, so the car releases hands free
- Engine stop from the app, latched until it is released
- Hardware developed this year, built and sold direct by LockCar in the UK
The tablet in the video is only for filming
We mounted a tablet on the console so the app screen is easy to see on camera. In daily use the app runs on your own phone, and with a PIN or trusted watch you may never need to open it at all.

The video, moment by moment
What you see on screen, and what CAN-IMMO is doing inside the car at the same time. Tap a time in the player above to jump straight to it.
| Time | What you see | What CAN-IMMO is doing |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | The LockCar CAN Immobiliser app finds the unit by its own name and connects | Bluetooth link to the hidden module, which identifies itself with a unique ID |
| 0:12 | Start button pressed, dashboard lights up, engine does not run | Ignition is allowed, engine start is held, so the car looks normal but goes nowhere |
| 0:20 | The driver presses the steering wheel buttons in a set order | The unit reads those button presses from the car’s own network as a PIN |
| 0:55 | App shows IMMOBILISED in red, ignition LOCKED, scanning for a trusted device | Live status read straight from the module, with a timestamp on every change |
| 1:02 | The status turns green and reads READY | Authorisation accepted, engine start released for this journey |
| 1:06 | An ENGINE STOP warning appears with Cancel and Stop | Command to force the engine to its stop state and latch it there, meant for a stationary or very slow car |
| 1:32 | A smartwatch is brought into the car and the app turns READY | The watch is set as a trusted device, so the car releases without a code |
| 2:05 | The watch is moved away and the app shows RECONNECTING | The unit notices the trusted device has gone and stops treating the car as authorised |
Timecodes refer to the full length clip and are rounded to the nearest second or two.

Why the M4 stays put with its own key inside
Watch the instrument cluster in the first part of the clip. The dash lights up exactly as it would on any normal morning, yet the engine never catches. That is deliberate. CAN-IMMO lets the ignition wake the car but holds back the start, so a thief who has relayed or reprogrammed a key gets a car that appears healthy and simply refuses to go. There is no siren and no flashing LED to tell them where to look.
- Genuine key present, engine still blocked
- No visible sign of where the module is hidden
- The factory BMW system keeps working exactly as before
- Release only follows a PIN, the app or a trusted device

A PIN typed on BMW’s own buttons
At 0:20 the driver presses the steering wheel controls in a sequence. Nothing was added to the dashboard to make that possible. CAN-IMMO listens to two CAN bus lines, the LIN bus and the ADC bus, so it can pick up those button presses as they travel across the car’s own wiring and treat them as a code. On another make the code might go in on window switches or climate buttons instead. The PIN to drive guide explains the idea in full.
- No keypad to find and no new wires in sight
- Code chosen by the owner and changeable later
- Reading several buses is what lets one unit learn many vehicles
- The same module works on 12V and 24V vehicles

The smartwatch moment, and why it matters day to day
From about 1:32 the driver brings a smartwatch into the cabin, and the app switches from red to a green READY without anyone typing a thing. Move the watch away and the screen shows RECONNECTING. This is the TRUST option in the app’s security settings. It solves the biggest weakness of any code system: people stop using it once it becomes a chore. With a trusted device you get the security without changing your routine, and the PIN stays as the backup for the day the watch is on the charger.
- Hands free release from a paired trusted device
- Status changes as soon as the device leaves
- PIN and app remain available as fallbacks
- Set up in the security options of the app

Engine stop from the app, with a safety warning first
At 1:06 the app asks for confirmation before an engine stop. The command puts the engine into its stop state and latches it, so it cannot simply be restarted. The warning on screen is there for a reason: the function is meant for a car that is stationary or barely moving, never for one at speed. Alongside the anti hijack mode, it covers the situation where somebody takes the car with the engine already running.
- Confirmation step before anything happens
- Engine held in the stop state until released
- Intended for stationary or very low speed use only
- Valet mode for servicing so the garage is not locked out
So why is all of this only £299 fitted?
Everything in the video comes in one price. Here is what that £299 covers, line by line, and why it can sit at that level.
| Item | What you saw in the clip | Included |
|---|---|---|
| CAN-IMMO module | The hidden unit the app connects to | Yes |
| Vehicle programming | Reading the BMW’s steering wheel buttons and start signals | Yes |
| LockCar app | Status, lock, unlock, engine stop and security options | Yes, free |
| Fitting at your address | Module hidden behind trim, then tested in front of you | Yes |
| Subscription | Nothing in the clip needs a data plan | £0 |
| Total | One payment | £299 12 month hardware warranty |
The price is low for three plain reasons. We design and manufacture the unit ourselves, so there is no distributor margin. The hardware and firmware are current, developed this year, and one design covers many makes because it reads several buses rather than relying on a single wire. And the app does the work a dedicated keypad or remote would otherwise do. Our full guide to car immobiliser cost breaks down prices across the market.

How good is it, honestly?
On the attacks that take most cars today, relayed keys and keys programmed through the diagnostic port, CAN-IMMO does what the video shows: a valid key alone is no longer enough. That is a big step up for a car whose factory security was designed before those tools became common. It is still an immobiliser. It will not tell you where the car is, it will not stop a window being broken and it cannot prevent the car being lifted onto a truck. If your insurer names a particular device in your policy, ask them before you buy. If recovery matters, pair CAN-IMMO with a tracker or look at the LockCar One Plus with 4G and GPS.
- Strong against relay and key programming theft
- No help locating a car once it is taken
- Worth checking with your insurer before fitting
- Probably unnecessary for a low value car with a metal key kept in a garage

Questions about the BMW demo
Does LockCar CAN-IMMO work on a BMW M4?
The video was filmed on a BMW M4 fitted with CAN-IMMO. Compatibility depends on the exact model and network layout, so send us your registration and we confirm it before booking.
Why does a CAN bus immobiliser this capable cost only £299 fitted?
LockCar designs and builds the unit and sells it direct, so there is no distributor margin. The app replaces extra hardware such as keypads, and one current design covers many vehicles. The £299 includes the module, programming, the app and fitting.
Do I have to enter the PIN every time I drive?
No. As the video shows, a trusted device such as a paired smartwatch can release the car automatically. The PIN on the steering wheel buttons stays as the backup.
Can the engine stop feature be used while driving?
It is designed for a vehicle that is stationary or moving very slowly, and the app warns you of that before it acts. It is not meant to stop a car travelling at speed.
Will my insurer give me a discount for fitting it?
Some insurers recognise a covert immobiliser and some do not. Ask yours before you book, and check whether your policy names a specific device. If they say it makes no difference and your car is garaged with a metal key, holding off is a sensible choice.
