Message us on WhatsAppHow much does a car immobiliser cost in the UK?
Car immobiliser cost in the UK comes down to three things: the unit, the setup for your vehicle and the time it takes to hide it. A CAN immobiliser with a steering wheel PIN typically costs £449 to £599 fitted. LockCAR kits cost £139 to £189 before fitting, with no subscription.

What the price of an immobiliser actually covers
Most quotes arrive as one number, which makes them hard to compare. Split one open and you find three parts, so ask every installer what theirs includes.
The unit. The module and its wiring, the only part you see on a price list.
Setup. Matching the unit to your make, model and wiring, so it recognises your car and nothing else.
Labour. Removing trim and hiding the module where a thief will not look. More trim means more hours.
Drivers ask about cost because the factory immobiliser is no longer enough. A relay attack stretches the signal from a key in your hallway, and a device on the diagnostic port can write a new key the car accepts. DVLA figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request recorded 61,343 vehicles reported stolen in 2024. Read how relay attacks steal keyless cars.
What a LockCAR immobiliser costs
Every LockCAR immobiliser blocks the engine until you prove it’s you. They differ in what you carry and how you disarm. Fitting is quoted for your vehicle.
| Immobiliser | How you disarm it | Hands-free | Price from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fob (TAG), IC3262 | Carry the TAG | Yes | £139 |
| Smart ring | Wear the paired ring | Yes | £149 |
| Smartwatch | Wear your smartwatch, no extra fob | Yes | £160 |
| PIN code | Enter your sequence on the steering wheel buttons | With optional TAG | £189 |
What pushes the fitted price up or down
Use these four factors to compare quotes like for like.
- Make and model
- More trim to remove means more hours, which is why premium cars often cost more to fit.
- Type of unit
- A unit that reads your steering wheel buttons over the CAN bus needs setting up for each vehicle. See CAN bus vs relay immobilisers.
- Who fits it, and where
- A careless fit can trigger warning lights that a dealer charges by the hour to trace.
- Extras and fees
- Tracking or cameras add hardware and usually a monthly data plan. A standalone immobiliser needs neither.
Is a CAN bus immobiliser worth the cost?
Yes, if you drive a keyless car that sleeps outside, because a relayed signal or a newly programmed key cannot start the engine on its own. Probably not, if your car has a metal key and lives in a locked garage. Comparing it with a tracker? Read why an immobiliser beats a GPS tracker alone.
What your money buys
- The engine stays off with a relayed key signal and no PIN or TAG
- The engine stays off with a new key written at the diagnostic port
- No keypad or LED for a thief to find
- Anti-hijack, plus a service mode so a garage never needs your code
What it doesn’t do
- Tell you where the car is. That is a tracker.
- Stop a window being smashed for a bag.
- Stop a car being winched onto a flatbed.
- Guarantee a lower premium. Some insurers take an aftermarket immobiliser into account, so ask yours.

Do these first, before you spend anything
We make immobilisers, so read this knowing that. These steps cost nothing, and for some cars they are enough.
- Ask your dealer about security updatesSome manufacturers release free theft-related updates. Give the dealer your VIN and ask.
- Put the key fob to sleepMany newer fobs stop transmitting when still, and some switch off with a button sequence. Check the handbook.
- Test your signal-blocking pouchSeal the key in the pouch, walk to the car and pull the handle. If the door opens, the pouch is not working.
- Reprogram the keys on a used carYou cannot know who still holds a working key. No electronic measure helps if a former owner has one.
Questions about car immobiliser prices
How much does a car immobiliser cost in the UK?
It depends on the type and who fits it. Confused.com puts a CAN immobiliser with a steering wheel PIN at £449 to £599 fitted (September 2026). LockCAR kits cost £139 for the fob version and £189 for the PIN code version, before fitting.
How much does it cost to have an immobiliser fitted?
It depends on your vehicle, because some cars need more trim removed than others. Send your registration and postcode on WhatsApp and you get a fitted price before you book.
Does a car immobiliser need a monthly subscription?
A standalone immobiliser should not. LockCAR immobilisers have no subscription and use local app control. Monthly fees belong to trackers that use mobile data.
Will an immobiliser lower my car insurance?
Not necessarily. Some insurers take an aftermarket immobiliser into account and others do not, so ask yours before you book.
Are LockCAR immobilisers Thatcham certified?
No. LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification; not Thatcham certified yet. Our Thatcham CAN immobiliser guide explains the process.
Can I fit a car immobiliser myself?
Yes, if you are confident with car wiring. The kit comes with a quick start guide, and an installation manual is available. If not, an approved installer can fit it for you.
Can I move the immobiliser to my next car?
Yes. The PIN code immobiliser can be reprogrammed for another vehicle, so the money is not lost when you change car.
