The LockCar CAN-IMMO is a CAN bus PIN code car immobiliser sold as a cheap alternative to the best known immobiliser brands, at £299 fitted. This page explains what it does, what a PIN code on the CAN bus actually means, the things worth doing for free before you buy one, and the situations where we would tell you to keep your money.
Your factory immobiliser is doing its job
Every car sold in the UK for decades has had an immobiliser built in. It works. The trouble is what it was designed to check: that a recognised key is present. Relay attacks, key cloning and diagnostic port programming all pass that check. The factory system is not defeated in those thefts. It is satisfied.
That is why a second layer has to sit outside the conversation between the key and the car. A PIN code immobiliser does exactly that. It watches the vehicle’s own network for a sequence of button presses you choose, and holds the engine start blocked until it sees them. No key in the world satisfies it.
CAN is the high speed network your car uses to pass messages between modules. LIN is the slower one for things like door mirrors and stalks. ADC means the unit reads an analogue voltage instead of a message. A unit that handles all three has more ways to find a usable button on an awkward vehicle.
Relay attack
One person stands near your hallway with an amplifier, another at the car. The car believes the key is in the driver’s hand. Doors open, engine starts, and nothing about the factory security has failed.
Key programming
A tool plugged into the diagnostic port writes a fresh key to the vehicle. The thief drives away on a key the car now treats as genuine. Your original key can be locked in a safe. It changes nothing.
Why an alarm is not the answer
An alarm reports a theft that is already under way, on a street where nobody investigates a siren. A PIN code immobiliser is silent and stops the engine instead. Different jobs, and people buy the wrong one often.
Four things that cost nothing, including one phone call
We sell the CAN-IMMO. We would still rather you did all of this before ordering, because for some vehicles it is enough, and because it takes an evening rather than a fitting slot.
Move the keys away from the front of the house
A relay attack extends your key’s signal from wherever it sits to whoever stands at the car. The bowl by the front door is the worst place for it. Upstairs, at the back, inside a metal tin you already own. One minute, and it removes the most common attack on a keyless car.
Find out if your key goes to sleep
Keyless keys are transmitting even after sitting still. Some need switching off with a button combination. Your handbook will say, and if it does not, your dealer’s service desk will tell you over the phone.
Ring your insurer before you order anything
Ask two things: does an aftermarket immobiliser change my premium, and do you require a specific accreditation or a professional install. Some policies care a great deal, some not at all. If yours insists on a particular approved category, buy that instead of ours. We would rather you knew now than after the fitting.

What the CAN-IMMO does not cover
Any security product is a deterrent and a delay. Nothing here is a guarantee, and the aim is to make your vehicle slower and less predictable than the one parked next to it. These are the specific gaps worth knowing before you spend.
It does not stop a flatbed
An immobiliser stops the engine starting. A vehicle can still be winched onto a truck. If organised removal is your realistic worry, prevention needs pairing with tracking, and that is a different product.
It does not stop a break-in
Someone can still put a window through for a laptop, take your badges or your catalytic converter. A silent immobiliser protects the vehicle from being driven off. Nothing more than that.
You have to carry something
The CAN-IMMO is disarmed by your phone over Bluetooth or an optional proximity TAG. A memorised button sequence needs nothing carried at all. If you routinely leave the house without your phone, that is a real argument for the sequence approach instead.
Not every vehicle is supported
Programming is vehicle specific. Some models expose plenty of usable buttons on the bus and some expose very little, particularly older imports and heavily optioned commercials. This is checked before you pay, not after.
It is not an insurance approval
The LockCAR CAN-IMMO immobiliser is to prevent and make it harder for the car to be stolen by starting the engine or locking the gearbox. But if the car is stolen it can no longer be stopped by an immobiliser
The install is most of the value
A concealed module wired into the loom behaves very differently from the same hardware crimped onto a CAN pair behind a trim panel. Anywhere you can reach easily is somewhere a thief can reach easily.

Cheaper does not mean better in every column. A memorised sequence beats the CAN-IMMO on one point that matters to some drivers: you carry nothing and there is no battery to go flat. Choose on how you want to disarm the car, then on price.

If your car is keyless, sought after and parked where the public can reach it, the free steps narrow the odds and then stop. That is where a fitted unit earns its money. The £299 is the fitted price at your address, with no separate fitting charge and no call-out fee.

What the fitted price actually buys
The module is the cheap part. You are paying for firmware matched to your make, model and year rather than something generic, wiring soldered and sleeved into the loom instead of crimped onto it, the unit concealed somewhere that takes trim removal to reach, and every factory function tested before we leave. Valet mode is set up and explained so you can hand the car to a garage without handing over your security.
The CAN-IMMO holds no GPS, no 4G and no camera. If you want tracking and live cameras in the same unit, that is the LockCar One Plus at £699, or something from the 4G dashcam range.
Skip it if your car is older, non-keyless and worth little more than the immobiliser, because the free steps and a steering lock are proportionate. Skip it if the car lives in a locked garage or a barriered car park every night. Skip it if you are selling within months. And if your insurer names a specific approved category, buy a product that holds it, even though that costs more than we charge.

Fitted at your address
Every CAN-IMMO can be fitted where the car already is, which for most customers means a driveway, a work car park or an industrial estate. Most installations take a few hours, depending on how much trim has to come apart to route the wiring out of sight.

Two practical notes. Have both keys available on the day, because the unit is tested against them. And if your battery is already marginal, say so when you book, since the car sits on ignition for part of the job and we will bring a support unit.

Is the LockCar CAN-IMMO a good cheap alternative to the best known CAN bus PIN code car immobilisers?
In terms of price and function, yes. It blocks the engine starting via the vehicle network, is hidden during installation and costs 299 pounds sterling to install. LockCAR CAN-IMMO is the best alternative at a lower price but with more features and options using the ultimate technology. The price is promotional for now.
Do I have to type a PIN code every time I drive?
YES. This is the main function of a CAN BUS immobilizer, at each start the pin code must be entered. But optionally LockCAR CAN-IMMO can be deactivated from the Mobile APP or automatically with the help of the optional proximity TAG as you approach the car. The sequential approach is MAIN if you prefer not to have anything on you.
Should I buy an immobiliser at all?
Not always. If the car is older, has no keyless entry, sleeps in a locked garage and is not on any theft-to-order list, the free steps in section two and a decent steering lock are a sensible stopping point.
Will it fit my car?
Programming is vehicle specific, so send the registration on WhatsApp and we will check before you pay oy yoy can check your self through LockCar vehicle check. LockCAR CAN-IMMO was designed to cover all car communication models, from ADC BUS, to LIN BUS and CAN BUS. So in theory there is no car that cannot be immobilised by LOCKCAR.
Can a CAN bus immobiliser damage my car or cause fault codes?
A correctly programmed unit, wired properly, should not. Problems come from three things: firmware that does not match the vehicle, power taken from the wrong circuit so modules stay awake and flatten the battery, and crimp connectors squeezed onto the twisted CAN pair. All three are installation faults rather than something inherent to the idea.
What happens if my phone dies or I lose the TAG?
You can connect a second phone by logging in with the unique credentials you receive upon installation.
Will it affect my manufacturer’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers. If the vehicle is still under warranty, call your dealer before booking. We will tell you exactly which circuits we intend to connect to, so you can ask them a specific question and get a straight answer instead of a general refusal.
Does it work on keyless cars?
Yes, and those are the vehicles it exists for. If your car unlocks as you walk towards it, it is the type most exposed to a relay attack, because the attack extends a signal the car is already listening for. The LockCAR CAN-IMMO takes no part in that exchange, so satisfying the factory system achieves nothing.
How do I hand the car to a garage or a valet?
Service and valet mode. You enable it before you drop the car off, the engine starts normally for the mechanic, and you switch it back afterwards. Nobody needs your app, your TAG or your settings. We walk you through it on the day.
Does the CAN-IMMO include GPS tracking or a camera?
No. It is an immobiliser only, with no GPS, no 4G and no camera. If you want tracking and live camera view in one unit, that is the LockCar One Plus at £699. Fitting a tracker alongside the CAN-IMMO is also possible and some customers do exactly that.
Can I move it to my next vehicle?
Yes. The unit is reprogrammable for another car, subject to that car being supported. Removal and refitting is charged separately and depends on both vehicles, so ask when you book and we will price it up front.
Do you fit to vans, HGVs and motorhomes?
Yes. All LockCar units support 12V and 24V installation and cover cars, vans, HGVs, electric vehicles, motorhomes and plant. Commercial vehicles are among the most common jobs we do, and tool theft is usually the reason owners call.
