Message us on WhatsAppDoes my car have an immobiliser? Four ways to find out
Most cars on UK roads have one, but age, imports and past repairs all make a difference. LockCAR, the Birmingham maker of CAN immobilisers, explains four quick checks, what the answer means, and how to see whether an added immobiliser suits your car.
- Built after October 1998?
- Search the handbook
- Online Vehicle CHECK
Four ways to check your car
Start with the first one. Most drivers have their answer by the second.
Look at the date
New cars sold in the UK have had to come with an immobiliser since October 1998. Your V5C logbook shows the date of first registration.
Search the handbook
Look up ‘immobiliser’ or ‘anti-theft’ in the owner’s handbook. Many makers publish their handbooks online.
Watch the dashboard
Many cars have a key or padlock light that blinks when the car is locked and goes out when a recognised key is used.
Ask a dealer or specialist
A franchised dealer can look up the factory specification from your VIN. A vehicle security specialist can check what is fitted.
Older cars, imports and repaired cars
The 1998 rule covers new cars. These are the cases where it pays to look harder.
- Built before October 1998
- Some makers fitted immobilisers earlier and some did not. Check rather than assume from the age alone.
- Imported cars
- Cars built for other markets may not follow the UK rule. A personal import needs its own check.
- Cars with replaced keys or parts
- Every key must be coded to the immobiliser. If a garage replaced the ignition lock or the engine control unit, ask what was coded and how many keys the car now accepts.
- Cars with an aftermarket system already
- A previous owner may have added one. Look for an extra fob, a service card or paperwork in the handbook wallet.
What your answer means for you
Knowing what is fitted only helps if it changes what you do next.
| What you found | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| A factory immobiliser and a key you turn | Hot-wiring and copied blades are blocked. A cloned or stolen key still starts the car. | Keep spare keys safe, and add a second check if the car sleeps outside. |
| A factory immobiliser and keyless entry | The car is open to relay attacks, because it trusts the fob signal. | Use a signal-blocking pouch and add an immobiliser that asks for a second proof. |
| No immobiliser at all | The car can be started with a copied blade or by hot-wiring. | Add protection. Run the Vehicle CHECK to see whether a LockCAR immobiliser is compatible. |
| Still not sure | The records do not give a clear answer. | Ask a dealer to check the VIN, or send us your car on WhatsApp. |
Your car has one. Is that enough?
- It trusts the keyA factory immobiliser starts the car for anything it believes is the key, including a relayed signal.
- Keyless cars need extra thoughtKeyless entry and start mean the fob never leaves your pocket, which is what relay attacks rely on.
- Second-hand cars carry unknown keysYou rarely know how many keys a used car accepts or who holds them.
- A second check closes the gapA LockCAR immobiliser keeps the engine blocked until you show your TAG, ring or watch, or enter your PIN.
Can a LockCAR immobiliser go on your car?

Questions if does my car have an immobiliser?
Is an immobiliser a legal requirement in the UK?
New cars sold in the UK have needed one since October 1998. No rule makes you add one to an older car, but it is worth knowing what yours has.
Can I tell from the key?
Not for certain. A chip key is a good sign, but only the car’s records or a specialist can confirm what is fitted.
Does the V5C logbook list the immobiliser?
No. It shows the date of first registration, which helps with the 1998 rule, but not the security equipment.
My car is from 1997. Should I add one?
If it has no immobiliser, adding protection is worth it. LockCAR immobilisers are CAN bus systems, so run the Vehicle CHECK first to see whether your car is compatible.
What does the flashing light on my dashboard mean?
On many cars, a slow flash with the car locked means the system is armed. A light that flashes or stays on when you try to start can point to a key problem. Your handbook gives the exact meaning.
Does a LockCAR immobiliser replace my factory one?
No. It works alongside it. Your car still checks its own key, and the LockCAR immobiliser adds a check of its own.
Can a garage add more keys to my car?
Yes. A dealer, or an auto locksmith with the right equipment, can code new keys to the immobiliser. If a key is lost, ask for it to be removed from the car’s memory.
