Message us on WhatsAppCar immobiliser problems: why your car won’t start and what to check
When a car will not start and the key light flashes, the immobiliser takes the blame. Often the cause is simpler. LockCAR engineers design immobilisers in Birmingham, and this guide walks through the checks in the order that saves you time and money.
- Fob battery first
- Try the spare key
- Never bypass it
Signs the immobiliser is involved
- The key or padlock light flashes when you try to start
- The car has not recognised the key.
- The engine cranks but will not fire
- Fuel or ignition is being held back after a failed key check, although other faults look the same.
- A message that no key is detected
- On a push-button car, the reader cannot find the fob in the cabin.
- It starts, then stops after a moment
- The engine control unit withdrew its release.
- One key works and the other does not
- The problem is in that key, not in the car.
One symptom on its own rarely proves anything. Two or three together, plus a note of when the fault happens, point you to the right person and save a wasted call-out.
What to check, in order
Replace the fob battery
A weak battery is a common cause on keyless cars, and it is the cheapest fix.
Try the spare key
If the spare works, the first key’s chip or battery is the problem.
Use the backup reader
Many push-button cars can read a fob with a flat battery when you hold it in a set spot. Your handbook shows where.
Check the car battery
Low voltage can upset the electronics and cause odd faults, including key errors.
If none of these work, call an auto electrician, an auto locksmith or your dealer.
Keep your handbook in the car, not in a drawer at home. It shows where the backup reader is and what each warning light means.
What not to do
- Do not try to bypass the immobiliserIt leaves the car easy to start without a key and can damage the electronics.
- Do not expect a second-hand key to workEvery key has to be coded to your car’s immobiliser.
- Do not keep crankingRepeated cranking drains the battery and makes the next attempt harder.
If you are stuck at the roadside, call your breakdown provider and tell them about any added security, so they know what they are dealing with.
Key, car or immobiliser? How to tell
Match what you see to the most likely cause before you pay for a diagnosis.
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The spare key works, the main key does not | The main key | Replace its battery, then have the chip checked by an auto locksmith |
| No key works and the dashboard lights look dim | The car battery | Charge or test the battery before anything else |
| No key works and the battery is healthy | The immobiliser or its wiring | Call an auto electrician or your dealer |
| It works some days and fails on others | The key chip or the reader coil | Note when it fails and tell the specialist |
| It started failing straight after a repair | Key coding after the repair | Go back to the garage that did the work |
If you have a LockCAR immobiliser
Engine blocked?
Check that your TAG, ring or watch is with you, or enter your PIN sequence again. Then message us with your car and what you see.
Thinking of fitting one?
A LockCAR immobiliser works alongside your factory one. Check your car first, then book an approved installer.
A LockCAR immobiliser blocks the engine on purpose until you prove it’s you, so a blocked engine usually means the second proof was not seen. That takes seconds to check before you call anyone.
Questions about immobiliser faults
Can a flat fob battery stop the car starting?
On many cars, yes, especially keyless ones. Replace the battery first, or use the backup reader your handbook describes.
What does a flashing immobiliser light mean?
A slow flash with the car locked is often normal and shows the system is armed. Flashing when you try to start usually means the key was not recognised. Check your handbook for your car.
Can an immobiliser drain the battery?
All electronics draw some power. If your battery keeps going flat, have the battery, the charging system and any added electronics tested before blaming one part.
Who can fix an immobiliser fault?
An auto electrician, an auto locksmith for key and chip faults, or your dealer.
Can I switch my immobiliser off?
You should not. It is part of your car’s security, and removing it makes the car easy to start without a key.
What if my LockCAR immobiliser blocks the engine?
It blocks the engine on purpose until it sees your TAG, ring or watch, or your PIN. If you have these and the engine is still blocked, message us on WhatsApp.
Can a weak car battery look like an immobiliser fault?
Yes. Low voltage can make the electronics misread the key or refuse to start. Test the battery before you assume the immobiliser has failed.
