Volkswagen Golf and Passat models with keyless entry have appeared increasingly in UK vehicle theft data. VW’s Keyless Access system uses the same passive RF architecture as every other relay-vulnerable platform. LockCar’s hardwired relay break operates independently of Keyless Access and stops relay attacks before they complete.
VW keyless theft risk in the UK
Volkswagen Group vehicles including Golf, Passat, Tiguan, and Touareg use the Keyless Access system as standard or optional equipment on mid and top trim levels. The system operates on 125kHz and 433MHz frequencies, identical in principle to BMW Comfort Access and Audi Advanced Key. Relay attack equipment that works on any of these systems works on all of them, meaning the criminal tool ecosystem is broadly applicable across the premium European vehicle market.
VW Golf theft has historically been high due to the model’s enormous UK registration base rather than its individual value. The MK8 Golf, introduced in 2020 with significantly enhanced infotainment and Keyless Access as standard on higher trims, brought a large cohort of relay-vulnerable Golfs onto UK roads. The Passat and Tiguan, with higher individual values, are targeted for their resale value as complete vehicles.
VW’s digital cockpit and MIB3 infotainment system, present in current Golf, Passat, and Tiguan models, is sensitive to electrical interference. LockCar engineers use VW-compatible installation procedures that avoid any interaction with the MIB3 system or the vehicle’s MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) network.
Hands-free protection for VW owners
The LockCar IC3ST provides a hands-free experience that is well-suited to daily-driver VW models. The encrypted proximity tag in your pocket automatically disarms the immobiliser as you approach and re-arms it when you walk away. There is no additional interaction required beyond what you already do to use your VW, making the security completely transparent in normal daily use.
For VW ID.3 and ID.4 electric model owners, LockCar’s EV-adapted installation procedure provides equivalent protection via the drive circuit rather than a conventional start circuit. The ID.4’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and heat pump components are not affected by the immobiliser installation.
How LockCar stops this threat
LockCar installs a hardwired relay break in the vehicle start circuit. This break is positioned downstream of the factory immobiliser, the OBD port, and the CAN bus. Even if a criminal performs a successful relay attack or CAN bus injection and satisfies the factory security, the engine will not start because the LockCar relay is open. Closing that relay requires a second, independent encrypted authentication that relay equipment cannot replicate. LockCar is designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom and installed by mobile engineers at your home, workplace, or any accessible location.
LockCar recommended products
How long does LockCar installation take?
Installation typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Our mobile engineer brings all parts and equipment to your location. The system is fully tested before the engineer leaves and you receive installation documentation on the same day.
Will LockCar interfere with my vehicle’s factory electronics?
No. LockCar installation uses vehicle-specific wiring procedures and connects to the start circuit in a way that is invisible to the factory CAN bus, ECU, and infotainment systems. All factory functions continue to operate exactly as before.
Does LockCar cover my area?
LockCar’s mobile service covers the entire UK. Same-day and next-day appointments are available in most areas. WhatsApp or call Victor to confirm availability and book at your preferred location.
Can I get insurance documentation after fitting LockCar?
Yes. Every LockCar installation comes with a full certificate including device serial number, installation date, vehicle registration, and a technical description of the relay break mechanism. This documentation is accepted by the majority of UK insurers for discount applications.
