Audi Q5 and Q7 relay theft UK, how to stop it in 2025
Audi Q5 and Q7 models are among the most frequently stolen premium SUVs in the UK. Advanced Key, Audi’s passive keyless entry system, uses the same relay-vulnerable architecture as every other passive keyless system on the market. LockCar adds a physical relay break in the start circuit that Advanced Key cannot override.

Advanced Key, Audi’s passive keyless entry system, uses the same relay-vulnerable architecture as every other passive keyless system on the market. LockCar adds a physical relay break in the start circuit that Advanced Key cannot override.
Why Audi models are targeted
Audi Q5 and Q7 models combine high residual values with Audi’s Advanced Key passive keyless entry system, creating a vehicle that is both valuable and relay-vulnerable. The Q7, particularly in S-line and Black Edition specification, commands £35,000 to £65,000 on the used market and has strong parts demand in domestic and export channels. The Q5, as Audi’s best-selling model, represents the largest registration base and consequently the highest theft volume by absolute number.
Advanced Key operates on the same passive RF challenge-response architecture as every other keyless system. Relay equipment that can steal a Range Rover can steal an Audi Q7 using exactly the same technique. Criminal networks do not need platform-specific tools for Audi relay attacks, which means every market-sold relay kit is immediately applicable to Audi models.
In the West Midlands, where Audi theft rates have risen in line with the general premium vehicle crime increase, B postcode areas of Birmingham, CV postcodes of Coventry, and WV postcodes of Wolverhampton all show elevated Audi Q-series theft rates. The M6 and A38 corridors allow stolen vehicles to be moved rapidly from residential areas to chop shops or export preparation facilities.
Audi Advanced Key and its limitation
Advanced Key continuously broadcasts a low-power challenge signal. When the Audi key fob comes within range, it responds and the vehicle unlocks. The relay attack extends this effective range from one metre to twenty or more, satisfying the Advanced Key authentication from a distance. The OEM immobiliser, which is part of the Advanced Key system, is satisfied by the same amplified signal. There is no distinction between a legitimate proximate key and a relay-amplified distant key at the ECU level.
Audi has implemented some countermeasures in more recent models including motion-sensing key fob standby modes. These reduce attack success rates but do not eliminate the vulnerability. The motion sensor can be defeated by gangs who generate vibration or sound near the property to reactivate the fob before attempting the relay. LockCar’s hardwired relay break provides protection regardless of whether the Advanced Key authentication has been satisfied.
How LockCar stops this threat
LockCar installs a hardwired relay break in the vehicle start circuit. This break is positioned downstream of the factory immobiliser, the OBD port, and the CAN bus. Even if a criminal performs a successful relay attack or CAN bus injection and satisfies the factory security, the engine will not start because the LockCar relay is open. Closing that relay requires a second, independent encrypted authentication that relay equipment cannot replicate. LockCar is designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom and installed by mobile engineers at your home, workplace, or any accessible location.
LockCar recommended products
How long does LockCar installation take?
Installation typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Our mobile engineer brings all parts and equipment to your location. The system is fully tested before the engineer leaves and you receive installation documentation on the same day.
Will LockCar interfere with my vehicle’s factory electronics?
No. LockCar installation uses vehicle-specific wiring procedures and connects to the start circuit in a way that is invisible to the factory CAN bus, ECU, and infotainment systems. All factory functions continue to operate exactly as before.
Does LockCar cover my area?
LockCar’s mobile service covers the entire UK. Same-day and next-day appointments are available in most areas. WhatsApp or call Victor to confirm availability and book at your preferred location.
Can I get insurance documentation after fitting LockCar?
Yes. Every LockCar installation comes with a full certificate including device serial number, installation date, vehicle registration, and a technical description of the relay break mechanism. This documentation is accepted by the majority of UK insurers for discount applications.
