There is no single best car immobiliser for every driver. We compare the five that UK drivers ask us about most: Autowatch Ghost, ScorpionTrack X-Series, StarLine i96, CAN Phantom and our own LockCAR range. You will see how each one is disarmed, what fitting costs and who each one suits.

Why fit an aftermarket immobiliser

In 2025 the DVLA recorded 86,113 vehicles as stolen, about 236 every day, and police forces recorded 115,084 vehicle thefts (Insurance Business, March 2026).

Most modern thefts do not need your key. A relay box picks up the signal of a keyless fob from inside your home, or a programming tool adds a new key through the diagnostic port. Either way, the car believes the right key is present. An aftermarket immobiliser adds a second check the thieves cannot pass: a code only you know, or a tag, ring or watch only you carry.

An alarm makes a noise: It can put off an opportunist, but noise alone does not stop a thief who already has a working key signal.
A tracker helps you find the car: It works after the theft, and most monitored trackers need a subscription.
An immobiliser stops it moving: It works before the theft: without your code or tag, the engine does not start.
Together they cover each other: Many drivers pair an immobiliser with a tracker: one stops the car leaving, the other finds it if it does.

The five immobilisers side by side

All five block the engine through the car’s own data network (the CAN bus), so there is no keypad or box on show. They differ in how you disarm them and in what fitting costs.

What each immobiliser does well, and what to check before you buy it.

Autowatch Ghost (Ghost-II and Ghost-III)

The best-known name in this group. Before the engine will run, you press a sequence of the car’s own buttons, such as the steering wheel or window switches. It talks to the car over the CAN bus and sends no radio signal that could be scanned. Autowatch is replacing the Ghost-II with the Ghost-III, a new platform that supports two CAN networks and the faster CAN-FD used on newer cars (Autowatch).

ScorpionTrack X-Series

Scorpion is a large UK vehicle security company best known for its trackers. The X-Series is its CAN bus immobiliser: you disarm it with a personal PIN entered on the car’s existing controls. Scorpion lists it at £449 with fitting and VAT included (ScorpionTrack).

StarLine i96

The StarLine i96 asks for two things before the car will drive: a Bluetooth tag or your paired phone, and a PIN entered on the car’s factory buttons. It blocks the engine through the CAN bus and can add extra wired or wireless relays (StarLine). Installers list it from about £499 fitted (Tuning Lab London).

CAN Phantom CP24

CAN Phantom is designed and made in the UK. Like the Ghost, it is disarmed with a sequence of the car’s own buttons, and its valet and maintenance mode is controlled through a web app (Carwow). The maker says the CP24 is certified to UN Regulation 116 and works on 12–24 V vehicles, from cars to vans, lorries and tractors. It is fitted by installers trained by CAN Phantom (CAN Phantom).

LockCAR (our own range)

LockCAR immobilisers are designed and built in Birmingham by AZFO Ltd. The same CAN bus immobiliser comes with four ways to disarm it: a PIN sequence on the steering wheel buttons, a TAG fob you carry, a smart ring or your smartwatch. The TAG, ring and watch versions work hands-free and need no internet or mobile signal. Kits start at £139, and fitted prices start at £249 for the TAG version and £299 for the PIN version.

Questions about choosing an immobiliser

Which is the best car immobiliser in the UK?

It depends on how you want to disarm it. If you never want to carry anything, choose a PIN system such as Autowatch Ghost, ScorpionTrack X-Series, CAN Phantom or the LockCAR PIN immobiliser. If you want to get in and drive, choose a hands-free system such as a LockCAR TAG, smart ring or smartwatch immobiliser. If you want two layers, the StarLine i96 asks for a tag and a PIN.

Is the Ghost immobiliser Thatcham approved?

No. The Autowatch Ghost is not Thatcham approved; it is recognised by TASSA, the Tracking and Aftermarket Security System Association. CAN Phantom is not Thatcham approved either. LockCAR immobilisers are going through Thatcham Security Certification and are not approved yet.

Does an immobiliser stop keyless relay theft?

Yes. A relay box can make the car believe its key is present, but a CAN bus immobiliser keeps the engine blocked until it gets its own code, tag, ring or watch. Without that second check, the car does not drive away.

How much does it cost to fit an immobiliser?

On the makers’ and installers’ own websites in October 2026, an Autowatch Ghost costs about £449 to £549 fitted, the ScorpionTrack X-Series £449 and the StarLine i96 about £499 to £550. LockCAR is fitted from £249 for the TAG version and £299 for the PIN version, and kits start at £139.

Will an immobiliser lower my insurance?

Sometimes. Each insurer decides which systems it recognises, so tell yours the make and model of the immobiliser before you buy and ask whether it changes your premium.

Can I fit an immobiliser myself?

Only if you are confident with vehicle electrics. A CAN bus immobiliser is wired into the car’s data network, so most drivers use an installer approved by the maker of the system they buy.
