Hardwired vs cigarette lighter dash cam, which is better for UK drivers in 2025
The choice between hardwiring a dashcam and plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket affects everything from parking mode reliability to installation tidiness. For most UK drivers who want genuine 24/7 protection including parking mode, hardwired installation by a professional engineer is significantly better. LockCar explains exactly why.

Cigarette lighter dashcam limitations
A dashcam powered from the cigarette lighter socket receives power only when the ignition is on in most vehicles. This means parking mode is not possible without additional wiring, because the camera loses power the moment you switch off the engine. Consumer dashcams sold with cigarette lighter adapters are therefore effectively driving-only devices with no parking protection.
The cigarette lighter adapter introduces two additional failure modes: the adapter can loosen and lose contact, causing recording gaps, and the adapter block takes up the only 12V socket in the vehicle, preventing other devices from using the socket. Visible cables running from the socket to the dashcam are both untidy and a potential distraction.
Some consumer dashcam kits include a hardwiring kit as an add-on, which connects the cigarette lighter adapter power lead directly to fused vehicle wiring. This is better than a socket adapter but is not the same as a professional hardwired installation.
Why hardwired installation is better
A professionally hardwired dashcam connects to the vehicle’s permanent live circuit (for parking mode power) and switched live circuit (for ignition-state detection) directly, with cables routed through the headlining and A-pillar to the dashcam position behind the rear-view mirror. No cables are visible. No socket is occupied. The system operates exactly as designed in all conditions.
24/7 parking mode is only reliably available with a hardwired permanent live connection. A hardwired dashcam with parking mode records impact and motion events while the vehicle is parked and the engine is off, providing evidence for car park damage, hit-and-run incidents, and relay theft attempts that occur while the owner is away from the vehicle.
LockCar’s professional installation includes cable routing, fused connections to vehicle wiring, and a post-installation test confirming correct operation in both driving and parking modes.
