Dash cam maintenance tips for longevity, keeping your dashcam working when it matters most
A dashcam is only useful if it is recording when an incident occurs. Poor maintenance, failed SD cards, and overheated devices are the most common reasons dashcams fail at critical moments. LockCar’s guide covers the most important maintenance practices that keep professionally installed dashcams working reliably throughout their service life.
SD card management
The SD card is the most commonly failed component in dashcam systems. Consumer-grade SD cards are not designed for the continuous read-write cycles that a dashcam loop recording imposes. A dashcam may perform several thousand write cycles per year on a typical daily-use schedule. Standard consumer SD cards are typically rated for a fraction of this workload.
Use only dashcam-specific or high endurance SD cards in any dashcam application. High endurance cards are specifically designed for continuous write cycles and typically carry an MTBF (mean time between failure) rating appropriate for dashcam use. Replace the SD card every twelve to eighteen months regardless of apparent condition, as flash memory degrades over time in ways that are not externally visible.
Format the SD card in the dashcam (not in a computer) every two to three months. Formatting removes filesystem fragmentation that can slow write speeds and cause recording gaps. Do not fill the SD card with non-dashcam files such as videos downloaded from other devices, as this reduces available space for loop recording and can corrupt the filesystem.
Lens and windscreen care
A dashcam lens covered in road grime, insect residue, or condensation produces footage that is significantly less useful as evidence. Clean the dashcam lens regularly using a microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents that can damage lens coatings. If the dashcam is mounted behind a tinted area of the windscreen, check local regulations on tinting levels as these affect visibility and recording quality.
Windscreen cleaning products, particularly those with ammonia-based formulas, can leave a residue on the glass that affects the dashcam’s field of view. Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth for the area of windscreen within the dashcam’s field of view.
Professional installation longevity advantages
Professionally installed dashcams have significantly longer operational service lives than self-installed consumer units. Professional installation uses hardwired permanent live connections rather than 12V socket power adapters that are prone to loosening and interruption. Cable routing through the headlining and A-pillar eliminates cable fatigue from repeated door opening and the visual and functional issues caused by loose cables.
LockCar’s professional installation includes a post-installation operational test and a system walk-through for the owner. This establishes a baseline against which any future changes in system behaviour can be compared, enabling early identification of developing issues before they result in recording failures.
