Message us on WhatsAppGhost immobiliser alternative: an honest look at what else is out there
If you have searched for an aftermarket immobiliser in the UK, you have almost certainly landed on the Autowatch Ghost. It is the best known name in the category. It is not the only one. This page compares it with the LockCar CAN-IMMO, including the situations where you have to take the right decision for you.
One brand owns the search results, which is not the same as owning the category
Ask most UK drivers to name an aftermarket immobiliser and they will say Ghost, or they will say nothing at all. That is a genuine achievement by Autowatch and it reflects a product that works. It also means a lot of people buy the first thing they find rather than the thing that suits their car, their budget and how they actually drive.
We make a competing product, so treat this page accordingly. What we have tried to do is write the comparison we would want to read if we were the buyer: every number sourced, the places we lose stated plainly, and no attempt to talk you out of a Ghost if a Ghost is what you need. If you finish this page and book a Ghost, that is a reasonable outcome.
The CAN-IMMO is cheaper and asks nothing of you before a journey. The Ghost is TASSA verified, which matters to some insurers, and needs no phone or tag. Those are the trade offs. Everything below is detail.
Both products solve the same problem
Your car already has a factory immobiliser. It checks for a valid key signal before letting the engine start. The trouble is that a relay attack satisfies that check rather than defeating it. The thief’s equipment extends your key’s signal from inside the house, and as far as the car is concerned the correct key answered. The factory system did its job and the car still left the driveway.
A bus level immobiliser is the aftermarket’s answer. A small concealed module joins the vehicle’s own data network and holds the start condition until it recognises a second, separate authorisation that a relayed key cannot supply. The Ghost works this way. So does the CAN-IMMO. On that core mechanism there is no meaningful argument between us, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.
Relay attack
An amplifier near your hallway, a receiver at the car. Doors open, engine starts, no damage, under a minute. Both products block it, because neither is listening for the key.
Key programming
A device at the diagnostic port writes a fresh key the car then treats as genuine. Both products block it, because the new key alone does not satisfy the second check.
Tow away
Neither product stops a flatbed. No immobiliser does. If that is a live risk for your vehicle, what you need alongside it is tracking, whoever you buy the immobiliser from.
Try this first, before you spend on either
A fair number of people who arrive on pages like this one do not need to buy anything. Work through these before you compare prices, because if they solve your problem you have saved several hundred pounds and we would rather you found that out here than after the fact.
Put the key to sleep
Most keyless fobs made since roughly 2018 have a motion sleep function that defeats a relay attack outright. The button combination is in your handbook. Test it properly: leave the key still for a few minutes, walk to the car, and confirm the doors do not unlock.
Move the keys, move the car
Keys away from the front door and the letterbox. The higher value vehicle parked in behind the lower value one. Wheels turned into the kerb. Unglamorous, free, and it removes the easy version of the job.
Ask your insurer what they want
Before you compare any two devices, ask your insurer or broker in writing what they will actually accept and what discount, if any, follows. The answer changes which product is right for you more than anything on this page does.
Same mechanism, different front door
If both modules hold the start until they recognise you, the interesting question is how you prove who you are. That is where the two products genuinely diverge, and it is the part worth thinking about carefully, because you will live with it every day for years.
The Ghost asks for a PIN
You enter a sequence on buttons that already exist in the car, on the steering wheel or the centre console, before you drive. Nothing to carry, nothing to charge, nothing to lose. It is a clean design and there is a real argument for it.
The CAN-IMMO recognises your phone
With Trust Mode on, the system clears as you approach with a paired phone or an optional Bluetooth tag, and arms again when you walk away. There is no sequence to enter. Your installer also sets up a backup sequence on existing cabin buttons for the day your phone is flat.
A sequence before every journey sounds trivial when you are reading about it and stops being trivial in a supermarket car park in the rain. The most effective immobiliser is the one still armed in six months. Some people are fine with a PIN forever. Others quietly stop using it. You know which you are.

Three situations Ghost or LockCar
This section exists because a comparison that never concedes anything is not a comparison, it is an advert. These are real and we are not going to argue you out of them.
Your insurer has asked for TASSA
Ghost installations are registered with TASSA and generate a certificate that some UK insurers want to see. The LockCar CAN-IMMO is not TASSA verified. If TASSA is a condition of your policy.
You do not want to depend on a phone
Trust Mode uses Bluetooth. There is a backup sequence on the cabin buttons, so a flat phone does not strand you, but if you want a system with nothing to pair, nothing to charge and nothing to lose, a PIN only device is the cleaner design for you. That is a legitimate preference and the Ghost serves it well.
Your car is very new
Autowatch built the Ghost-III specifically for dual CAN and high speed CAN-FD networks on the newest vehicles. Send us your registration and we will check honestly whether the CAN-IMMO is a good fit for your car. If it is not, we will say so rather than fit something marginal and hope.
What we would fit, and what it costs
If none of the three situations above applies to you, here is what we would put on the car. We also make relay based units for older vehicles, vans, HGVs and plant, where a bus level device is not the right answer. Which one suits you comes down to the vehicle, not to which one we would rather sell.
LockCar CAN-IMMO
Our bus level immobiliser. Controlled from your phone, with an optional hands free tag and a backup sequence on existing buttons.
- CAN bus, LIN bus and ADC bus support
- Concealed module, 48 x 24 x 15mm
- Trust Mode, arms and clears automatically
- Over the air firmware updates through the app
- Service and valet mode, anti hijack
- 12 month hardware warranty
LockCar tag immobilisers
For vehicles where a bus level unit is not the right answer. A physical relay interrupts an engine circuit, with no data network connection at all.
- Universal on 12V and 24V
- Suits older cars, vans, HGVs, motorhomes and plant
- Proximity tag or trust device disarming
- Anti hijack and valet mode
Check your vehicle first
Compatibility is confirmed before booking, not discovered on the driveway. Send the registration and we will tell you which units your car actually supports.
- Known theft method for your model
- Which unit we would fit, and why
- Fitted price and nearest slot
- An honest no if that is the answer
The CAN-IMMO is an immobiliser only. It has no GPS, no 4G and no camera, and the same is true of the Ghost. If you want tracking and live view in the same unit, that is the LockCar ONE Plus or another system from the 4G dashcam range.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a cheaper alternative to the Ghost immobiliser?
Yes. The LockCar CAN-IMMO starts at £199 against a Ghost commonly advertised at around £499 fitted by independent UK installers. Both are bus level immobilisers that hold the engine start until a second authorisation is given.
Is LockCar the same thing as a Ghost, or a copy of one?
No. LockCar is a separate company with its own product. Ghost is a product of Autowatch Ltd and we have no connection with them, no licence from them, and no involvement of any kind. The CAN-IMMO is not a clone, a replica or a rebadge of a Ghost. It is a different device that addresses the same problem in a different way.
Will my insurer accept an immobiliser that is not TASSA verified?
Some will, some will not, and it varies by insurer, vehicle and postcode. This is genuinely not a question we can answer for you, and you should not take either manufacturer’s word for it. Ask your insurer or broker directly, in writing, what they will accept and what difference it makes to your premium. If they insist on TASSA, buy a TASSA verified product.
Which is better, a PIN sequence or a proximity tag?
Neither is better in the abstract. A PIN needs nothing carried or charged, but it needs doing every journey. A tag or phone needs nothing done, but something has to be present and charged. The failure mode differs: a PIN can be forgotten, a phone can go flat. Both products have a backup route in for that reason. Pick the one you will still be using in a year.
Do I even need an aftermarket immobiliser?
Possibly not. If your car is not keyless, is not high on the theft tables, and lives in a locked garage, your money may be better spent elsewhere. Put the key to sleep, test that it works, and see whether that settles the problem. We would rather tell you to keep your money than sell you a device you do not need.
Will fitting one affect my manufacturer’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers and this is a question for your dealer, not for us or for anyone selling you a device. If the car is still under warranty, ask them before you book. We will tell you exactly what we intend to connect to on your vehicle so you can put a specific question rather than a general one.
Can the CAN-IMMO be moved to my next car?
Yes, the unit is reprogrammable for a different vehicle. Removal and refitting is charged separately and depends on both cars, so ask when you book and we will price it before you commit.
