Message us on WhatsAppHow Much Does a Car Immobiliser Cost in the UK? Cost Breakdown for UK Drivers
A fitted car immobiliser cost is built from three parts: the hardware, the programming for your exact vehicle and the labour to hide it well. LockCar, the UK manufacturer, fits from £199, and the CAN bus CAN-IMMO is £299.
- Made by: LockCar, UK manufacturer
- Fitting: at your address, UK wide
- Subscription: none
Ask three installers for a price and you will often get three single numbers that are impossible to compare. This page opens the price up. It shows what each part of a quote pays for, the factors that push a total higher, the free checks worth doing before you spend anything, and where LockCar sits because we build the units ourselves and sell them direct.
- Hardware, vehicle programming and fitting all included in one LockCar price
- CAN-IMMO reads two CAN bus lines, LIN bus and ADC bus, with PIN to drive
- The same price in every part of England, Scotland and Wales
- No monthly fees, no app charges, no annual service
- Compatibility confirmed from your registration before anyone books a visit
A price means nothing until the unit suits your car
Send us the registration number first. We confirm which LockCar model your make, model and network layout accepts, and you get the full fitted figure before a single panel comes off.

LockCar immobilisers and their fitted prices

Where your money goes: a fitted price split into its parts
A quote for a hidden immobiliser always pays for the same handful of things. Here is each one, and what it adds to the LockCar CAN-IMMO price. Use the same rows to read any other quote you receive.
| Part of the price | What you are paying for | LockCar CAN-IMMO |
|---|---|---|
| The unit | CAN bus module, loom and connectors | Included |
| Suitability check | Confirming from the registration that the unit matches your vehicle | Included |
| Programming | Matching the unit to your make, model and network layout | Included |
| Fitting and test | Concealed installation where the car is parked, then start, stop and valet tests | Included |
| Running costs | Subscriptions, app fees or yearly checks | £0 |
| You pay | One payment, nothing after | £299 12 month hardware warranty |
Prices are LockCar’s own supplied and fitted prices at the time of reading this page. Your exact figure is confirmed against your registration before booking.

Why drivers are pricing up immobilisers at all
The factory system only checks one thing: whether a valid key is present. Thieves now answer that check for it. A relay box carries the signal from a key left in the hallway out to the car. A programmer in the diagnostic socket writes a brand new key the car then trusts. The original immobiliser behaves exactly as designed, for the wrong person. DVLA data released under Freedom of Information put the number of vehicles reported stolen in 2024 at 61,343, and most were everyday cars.
- Relay attack: the key never leaves the house
- Key programming: a new key is added through the OBD port
- An aftermarket immobiliser adds a second check the thief cannot answer
- That second check is what the money in a quote really buys

Five things that make a quote go up or down
Across the trade the same factors move the number. Knowing them lets you ask the right question when a figure looks high, or suspiciously low. As a manufacturer selling direct, we remove one link from the chain, and that is the main reason our prices sit where they do.
- Make and model: some cars hide their network wiring behind far more trim
- Type of unit: a relay cut is simpler to build than a module reading several buses
- Installer skill: it affects the labour rate and whether the job is done right once
- Extras: GPS tracking or cameras add hardware and sometimes a fee
- Labour rates by region: LockCar charges one price nationwide to remove this

Free checks to do before paying for anything
We build immobilisers, so take this list knowing that, and still do it. Most items take minutes. For a garaged car with a plain metal key, they may be all you need, and keeping your money is a sensible outcome.
- Ring your dealer with the VIN and ask about security updates. Land Rover, for one, offers a no charge update for 2016 onwards vehicles
- Check the handbook for a fob sleep mode and switch it on
- Test your pouch at the car door. Tracker has warned that many pouches leak signal
- Bought used? Have the keys reprogrammed, as police theft advice also suggests
- Use a visible steering lock to add time and noise

What a bigger budget will not buy you
Spending more does not always mean more protection. An immobiliser keeps the engine from starting, and that is all. It will not show where the car went, will not stop a smashed window and cannot beat a recovery truck. Factory fixes have limits too: Jaguar Land Rover reported security updates for more than 65,000 UK vehicles, which helps those owners and nobody else.
- A cheap unit badly wired can cause warning lights and diagnostic faults
- Those faults are billed by the hour at a dealer, so poor fitting is false economy
- Need to find a stolen car? That is a tracker, a separate purchase
- Insurance discounts are not guaranteed, so ask your insurer before buying
Ways to protect a car, compared on cost and on real attacks
Types of protection, not brands. Many owners combine two of these, and the best pair depends on where the car spends the night.
| Situation | Pouch and steering lock | Tracker | Tag immobiliser | Hidden CAN bus immobiliser with PIN |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Key signal relayed from indoors | Stopped if the pouch works | Reports afterwards | Start blocked without the tag | Start blocked |
| New key added at the OBD port | Lock cut or removed | Reports afterwards | New key alone fails | New key alone fails |
| Daily effort | Both, every time | None | Carry the tag | None with phone or tag paired |
| Locating the car later | No | Yes, its main job | No | No |
| Running cost | None | Usually a subscription | None | None |
| Upfront cost | About £20 to £120 | Hardware plus fitting | £199 fitted LockCar tag model | £299 fitted LockCar CAN-IMMO |

LockCar CAN-IMMO: £299 with fitting included
This is the paid step for drivers the free checks leave exposed: keyless cars parked on the road, vans that hold tools overnight, performance models that appear on theft lists. We design and manufacture CAN-IMMO in the UK. It sits inside the vehicle network and reads two CAN bus lines, the LIN bus and the ADC bus, so it recognises genuine activity on your particular car. Start is authorised by a PIN on buttons the car already has, by the LockCar app over Bluetooth, or by an optional proximity tag. Setup is covered in the CAN-IMMO manual, and the start code idea is explained on our PIN to drive guide.
- No LED, no keypad, nothing visible in the cabin
- Service and valet mode, plus anti hijack
- Works on 12V and 24V: cars, vans, HGVs, EVs and motorhomes
- Reprogrammable, so it can move to your next vehicle
- Not worth it if the car is worth under £299, has a metal key and lives in a locked garage

The same price wherever you live in the UK
Local labour rates are one of the main reasons immobiliser quotes differ from town to town. We charge one fitted price across England, Scotland and Wales, and the work is done where the car already is, so it never spends a night out of your sight. Most jobs take a few hours. Units are built and tested at our Midlands base, covered on the Birmingham immobiliser page, and we fit regularly in Sutton Coldfield and Walsall.
- Driveway, street or work car park
- Fitted by our engineers or a trained installer near you
- Commuter cars, vans, premium and performance models, fleets
- Check your vehicle first with the LockCar vehicle check

Who is behind the price
Someone is about to open your dashboard, so it is fair to check them first. LockCar is registered in England and Wales, company number 14346129, with terms published in full. Reviews come only from customers whose vehicles we fitted, and you can read them unedited on our Google Business Profile. More background is in about LockCar.

What the LockCar price includes

Questions drivers ask about price
How much does a car immobiliser cost in the UK?
It depends on the type you choose. A tag based unit costs less, and a hidden CAN bus unit with a PIN costs more because of the programming and fitting time. LockCar fits from £199, and CAN-IMMO with PIN to drive is £299 fitted, at the same price anywhere in the UK.
Do premium cars cost more to fit an immobiliser to?
Often, across the trade, because more trim has to come off to reach the network wiring safely. Send us the registration and we confirm compatibility and the final figure before you book, so the price does not change on the day.
Is there a monthly fee for a car immobiliser?
A standalone immobiliser should not need one, and LockCar immobilisers have none. Monthly fees normally belong to trackers and connected systems that use mobile data.
Will fitting an immobiliser make my insurance cheaper?
Possibly, possibly not. Ask your insurer before you buy whether they recognise a covert immobiliser and whether your policy names a specific device. If the answer is no and the free checks above already suit how you park, the honest advice is to do nothing for now.
Is a CAN bus immobiliser worth paying for?
For a keyless car that sleeps outside, usually yes, because it stops the relay and key coding methods behind most current thefts. For an older car with a metal key kept in a garage, usually not. Look at how the car lives before you look at the price.
All prices on this page are LockCar supplied and fitted prices and are confirmed against your registration before booking. The upfront cost shown for pouches and steering locks is a general guide only.
