Message us on WhatsAppPIN to drive: the affordable car immobiliser alternative for cars that never came with one
PIN to drive means the engine stays blocked until somebody enters a code that has nothing to do with the car key. A handful of vehicles have it from the factory and you can switch it on today for nothing. If yours does not, LockCar CAN-IMMO adds the same idea as a hidden module for £299 including fitting at your address.
What PIN to drive actually means, and what it does not
Your car already asks one question before it starts: is a valid key present. PIN to drive adds a second question with a completely separate answer, held by you rather than by the fob in your pocket. Solve the first question and you have solved nothing about the second.
That distinction matters because almost every current theft method works by answering question one convincingly. A relay attack stretches the signal from a fob sitting in your hallway until the car believes the driver has arrived. A cloning device plugged into the diagnostic socket writes a fresh key the vehicle then treats as genuine. In both cases the factory immobiliser does exactly what it was designed to do. It just does it for the wrong person.
The scale is not trivial. DVLA figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request and analysed by What Car? recorded 61,343 vehicles reported stolen in 2024, with 4,446 Ford Fiestas taken in that single year. Those are not exotic cars. They are ordinary vehicles parked on ordinary streets.
A better key does not fix this, because the attack targets the conversation between key and car, not the key itself. A second question, answered somewhere else entirely, does fix it.
It is worth being clear about what this is not. A start code is not a tracker and it will not tell you where the vehicle went. It does not stop anyone breaking a window to reach the contents. It does nothing about a flatbed and a winch, which is how determined crews take a car they cannot start. What it does is remove the quiet, one minute, drive it away theft that accounts for most of what happens on UK driveways.
Five things worth doing before you buy anything
We sell immobilisers, so read this section with that in mind and then do it anyway. Several of these take ten minutes and cost nothing, and for some readers they will be enough.
Switch on the code you already have
Tesla owners have this built in. On the touchscreen, open Controls, then Safety, then PIN to Drive, and set a four digit code. Tesla documents the path and the reset process, and since the 2023.20 release the code can also be set from the phone app. Do not use 1234 or a birth year.
Ask about a free security update
Manufacturers quietly issue theft related updates. Land Rover states that its security update is complimentary for vehicles from 2016 onwards, including cars out of warranty. Ring your dealer, quote the VIN and ask whether any security campaign applies to it.
Put the fob to sleep
Many fobs made after roughly 2018 have a motion sensor that stops them transmitting once they have been still for a few minutes, and some can be switched off manually with a button sequence. The handbook index entry is usually under key, remote or transmitter. If yours has it, use it.
Fourth, use a signal blocking pouch, then test it properly. Put the key inside, seal it, walk up to the car and pull the handle. If the doors open, the pouch is decorative. Tracker has warned that substandard pouches are widespread and that owners should test rather than assume. Test the spare key as well, because a spare in a kitchen drawer near the front wall is the one that gets relayed.
Fifth, if you bought the car used, get the keys reprogrammed. You have no way of knowing how many keys exist for that vehicle or who holds them, and no electronic security helps if a previous owner or a previous trade buyer still has a working key. Police forces make the same point in their vehicle crime advice, alongside standard guidance on keys, pouches and physical locks.
A visible steering lock belongs on the list too, with an honest description of what it does. It will not stop anybody. It adds noise and time, and thieves working to a schedule tend to move on to the next driveway rather than spend four minutes on a hardened bar in view of a bedroom window.
Where a factory PIN stops helping
If the free steps covered everybody we would not sell many immobilisers. Here is where they run out, described accurately rather than dramatically.
The first limit is availability. Almost no mainstream manufacturer selling in the UK offers a driver code before every journey. Jaguar Land Rover, for example, answered the theft problem with body control module changes and ultra wide band keys rather than asking the driver to type anything, and it reported updates rolled out to more than 65,000 UK vehicles on that basis. Good engineering, but nothing you can enable yourself on a 2019 Golf or a Transit Custom.
The second limit is the bypass route. Tesla’s own owner documentation states that valet mode disables the PIN to Drive setting, and that a forgotten code can be cleared by entering Tesla account credentials on the touchscreen. Both are sensible for owners locked out of their own car. Both also mean your vehicle security now depends on your email account and your phone, which is a different risk, not a smaller one.
The third limit is physical. A code typed on the same four spots of a glass screen leaves marks. Tesla addressed this years ago by moving the keypad around the display, which tells you the concern was real enough to engineer against.
The fourth is human. Any measure you have to perform every time you drive gets abandoned around week three, usually in the rain with shopping in both hands. That is the single biggest argument for a system that can also release automatically to a tag or a paired phone and keep the code as the fallback rather than the daily routine.
The fifth is insurance. A start code is not a tracker. If your policy schedule specifies a Thatcham S5 or S7 device, only that device satisfies the condition, and the RAC guide to Thatcham categories explains the difference plainly.
Any immobiliser, factory or aftermarket, is a delay and a deterrent. The aim is to make your vehicle slower, noisier and less predictable than the one parked next to it, not to make it impossible to steal.
Four approaches, side by side
This compares approaches rather than brands. Most owners end up using two of these together, and the sensible pairing depends on the vehicle and where it sleeps.
| Situation | Factory PIN to drive, where fitted | Pouch and steering lock | Tracker | Hidden aftermarket PIN immobiliser |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Key signal relayed from inside the house | ✓ Start blocked | ✓ Blocked if the pouch is sound | ✗ Reports after the event | ✓ Start blocked |
| New key written at the diagnostic port | ✓ The new key alone is not enough | ✗ Lock is cut or the wheel is removed | ✗ Reports after the event | ✓ The new key alone is not enough |
| Available on a used mainstream car | ✗ Rare outside a few makes | ✓ Any vehicle | ✓ Any vehicle | ✓ Any 12V or 24V vehicle |
| Effort on every single journey | Code entry each time | Pouch and lock each time | None | None if a tag or phone is paired |
| Recovering the vehicle afterwards | No | No | ✓ Its whole purpose | No |

Adding PIN to drive to a vehicle that has no such setting
This section is for readers the free steps do not cover: a keyless car with no code option, a van that lives on the street, a vehicle an insurer is nervous about. LockCar CAN-IMMO puts the second question back into a car that never had one.
The module joins the vehicle network rather than sitting on top of it. It reads two CAN bus lines plus the LIN bus and the ADC bus, which is how it recognises legitimate activity on your specific make and model instead of guessing from voltage alone. Programming is vehicle specific, and the unit can be reprogrammed for a different vehicle later.
You authorise it in one of three ways. A code entered on buttons the car already has, such as steering wheel or climate controls, so there is no keypad to find. The LockCar app over Bluetooth. Or an optional proximity tag that releases the car as you walk up, with the code kept as the backup for the day your phone is flat. Full setup detail sits in the CAN-IMMO guide and user manual.
There are no LEDs and no visible components, so somebody searching a dark cabin has nothing to find and no obvious wire to cut. Service and valet mode lets you hand the vehicle to a garage without handing over your security, and we show you how before we leave.
LockCar CAN-IMMO
Fitting included. Hidden CAN bus immobiliser with PIN to drive, app control and an optional tag.
- Two CAN bus lines, LIN bus and ADC bus
- Code entered on the vehicle’s existing buttons
- App for Android and iPhone over Bluetooth
- Optional proximity tag for hands free release
- Hidden module, no LED, no keypad
- Service and valet mode, anti hijack
- 12V and 24V, reprogrammable to your next vehicle
If you drive a Tesla, keep it in a locked garage and have already enabled the built in code, buy a better door lock instead. If your vehicle is worth less than the fitting price and has a traditional metal key with no keyless entry, your risk is different and cheaper measures cover it. If your insurer has demanded a Thatcham S5 tracker as a policy condition, fit that first, because an immobiliser will not satisfy that clause on its own.
If you want the tag approach without the code, the LockCar IC3262 is £199 fitted, and the LockCar One Plus at £699 adds 4G, GPS and cameras. The full range sits in the immobiliser category, and there is a broader comparison in our car immobiliser guide.
Fitted at your address, not at a workshop
Every installation happens where the vehicle already is, which means it never sits overnight somewhere you cannot see it. Most jobs take a few hours depending on how much trim has to come apart to route wiring out of sight.

Frequently asked questions
What does PIN to drive mean on a car?
It means the vehicle will not move until somebody enters a code that is separate from the key. Tesla ships the feature and calls it exactly that. On other makes the same result is achieved with an aftermarket immobiliser that holds the start condition until it gets a code, a paired phone or a proximity tag.
Can I add a start code to a car that does not have one?
Yes. That is what LockCar CAN-IMMO does, at £299 including fitting. The code is entered on buttons the car already has, so nothing is added to the dashboard and there is no keypad for anyone to spot. It works on 12V and 24V vehicles, including vans, HGVs, EVs and motorhomes.
Will an aftermarket immobiliser lower my insurance premium?
Sometimes, and sometimes not at all. Do not fit one expecting a discount. Ring your insurer before you book, ask whether they recognise a covert immobiliser and whether they want a specific Thatcham category, then decide. If they say no, and the free measures earlier on this page already cover your situation, the honest answer is to do nothing and keep the £299.
Do I have to enter the code every time I drive?
Only if you want to. With the app or the optional tag paired, the car releases as you approach and the code stays as the backup. We suggest setting it up that way, because a security measure that irritates you daily is one you will eventually stop using.
What happens if I forget the code or my phone dies?
The tag still works with a flat phone, and the code still works with a lost tag. If you lose all three you call the engineer who fitted it, and identity is verified before anything is reset. Keep a spare tag at home rather than in the vehicle.
