Vehicle tracking systems have evolved from basic GPS loggers to sophisticated 4G-connected devices that provide real-time location, speed monitoring, journey history, and even remote engine immobilisation. LockCar’s hardwired 4G GPS trackers eliminate the battery management problems of consumer trackers while delivering professional-grade fleet and personal vehicle monitoring across London, Birmingham, and the entire UK.
Why you need a professional vehicle tracking system
Consumer GPS trackers that run on internal batteries present fundamental limitations. Battery life forces compromises on update frequency — a tracker that updates every 30 seconds will drain its battery in days rather than weeks. Users reduce update intervals to preserve battery, but longer intervals mean the tracker may miss the moment a vehicle is moved during a theft. The tracker also depends on the user remembering to recharge it, creating tracking gaps when it is most needed.
Hardwired 4G GPS solves these problems completely. The tracker draws power directly from the vehicle’s electrical system, operates continuously without any battery management, and provides real-time updates as frequently as every few seconds. No charging, no replacement schedule, and no tracking gaps from a depleted battery. The LockCar 4G GPS platform delivers live location, speed alerts, journey history, and optional remote immobilisation through a single mobile app.
For parents of new drivers, fleet operators managing multiple vehicles, and owners of high-value cars, a hardwired 4G GPS tracker provides reliable oversight that battery-powered alternatives cannot match. The LockCar Fleet Monitoring Platform (LFM) extends this capability to businesses managing fleets of five or more vehicles, centralising location, immobilisation status, camera feeds and trip history in a web-based dashboard.
How LockCar 4G GPS tracking works
LockCar’s 4G GPS tracker installs behind the dashboard, connected to the vehicle’s permanent power supply. Once fitted, the tracker continuously monitors GPS satellite signals to determine position, speed, and direction. Position data is transmitted via the 4G mobile network to LockCar’s secure cloud platform. The vehicle owner accesses this data through the LockCar mobile app or web dashboard.
Speed alerts are configurable per vehicle. When the configured threshold is exceeded, the app sends an immediate push notification. This feature is particularly valuable for parents monitoring new drivers and for fleet operators managing driver behaviour. Journey history records every trip including the route taken, maximum speed achieved, duration, and start and end times. All data is stored securely and accessible for as long as the account remains active.
Remote immobilisation, available on LockCar One Plus, allows the vehicle owner to prevent the engine from starting via the app. This feature is useful for fleet operators managing late payments and for owners who want an additional layer of security when the vehicle is parked for extended periods. The immobiliser engages a relay break in the start circuit that cannot be bypassed without the encrypted authorisation from the app.
London coverage — all boroughs and postcodes
London presents unique vehicle tracking challenges. The congestion charge zone, Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), and Low Emission Zone (LEZ) require drivers to know whether their vehicle has entered restricted areas. LockCar’s 4G GPS can be configured with geofence alerts that notify the owner when the vehicle enters or exits any defined zone, including the Congestion Charge zone, ULEZ, and LEZ boundaries.
Our London mobile service covers all 32 London boroughs plus the City of London. This includes Central London postcodes EC1–EC4, WC1–WC2, W1, SW1, and all surrounding districts including E, N, NW, SE, SW, and W postcode areas. We install at your home, workplace, or any accessible parking location across Greater London. Same-day appointments are available in most London areas.
For London fleet operators, LockCar’s LFM platform provides centralised management across multiple vehicles. Track your entire fleet in real time, receive alerts for unauthorised vehicle use, and review driver behaviour through journey history data. The platform scales from five vehicles to hundreds.
Birmingham coverage — all postcodes and surrounding areas
Birmingham, as the UK’s second-largest city, requires reliable vehicle tracking for both private owners and commercial fleets. The Birmingham Clean Air Zone (CAZ) operates across the A4540 Middleway ring road. LockCar’s geofence alerts notify you immediately when your vehicle enters or exits the CAZ, helping avoid penalty charges.
Our Birmingham mobile service covers all B postcode districts from B1 to B99. This includes Birmingham city centre, Edgbaston, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull, Wolverhampton, and all surrounding West Midlands areas. Coverage extends to adjacent postcodes including DY, WS, WV, and CV as part of our West Midlands service area.
Birmingham’s position at the heart of the UK motorway network — with M5, M6, M6 Toll, M40, and M42 all intersecting — makes it a critical location for fleet operators. LockCar’s 4G GPS provides continuous tracking across all major routes, with no coverage gaps between cities. Vehicles moving between Birmingham, London, Manchester, and Bristol remain visible at all times.
LockCar vehicle tracking range
Can I track my vehicle in real time from my phone?
Yes. LockCar’s mobile app shows live location, speed, and direction. Updates occur every few seconds when the vehicle is moving — no battery limitations like consumer trackers.
Does LockCar work across London and Birmingham without signal gaps?
Yes. LockCar uses the UK 4G network with multi-carrier fallback. Coverage includes all London boroughs, the entire Birmingham area, and all major motorways connecting them. No gaps between cities.
How is LockCar different from an AirTag or battery tracker?
AirTags rely on passing Apple devices and notify the thief if an unknown AirTag is moving with them. Battery trackers require recharging and compromise update frequency to preserve battery. LockCar is hardwired to your vehicle — continuous real-time tracking, no battery management, and no notification to thieves.
Can LockCar help with fleet management across multiple cities?
Yes. The LockCar Fleet Monitoring Platform (LFM) centralises location, immobilisation status, and journey history for every LockCar-equipped vehicle. Track your fleet across London, Birmingham, and the entire UK from a single web dashboard.
Will a hardwired tracker drain my car battery?
No. LockCar trackers draw minimal current when the vehicle is parked — approximately 5–10mA. A healthy vehicle battery can support the tracker for months without driving. The tracker also includes low-voltage protection that shuts down non-essential functions if battery voltage drops below a configured threshold.
