Pickup truck theft UK — Ford Ranger & Hilux protection
UK pickup truck theft has risen sharply. The Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, VW Amarok, and Isuzu D-Max are all targeted by organised gangs who steal to order for domestic and export buyers. Pickups parked on farms, building sites, and suburban driveways face the same relay attack risk as any keyless passenger vehicle. LockCar’s 20A commercial-grade immobiliser stops pickup theft at the start circuit.

Pickup trucks occupy a unique position in the UK vehicle crime landscape. They combine the high residual value and keyless entry vulnerability of premium SUVs with the rural and semi-rural operating environments that typically have lower ANPR and CCTV coverage. The result is a theft risk profile that is arguably worse than for an equivalently valued urban-parked luxury car. LockCar provides purpose-rated 20A immobilisers for all UK pickup truck platforms, installed by mobile engineers at your location.
Pickup truck theft — the UK trend
Pickup truck registrations in the UK have grown consistently over the past decade, driven by favourable tax treatment for vehicles rated as light commercial goods vehicles, the growth of the construction and agricultural sectors, and the crossover appeal of modern lifestyle pickups for personal use. This growing registration base has been accompanied by a proportionate increase in theft targeting. Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux together account for the majority of UK pickup thefts, reflecting their dominant market share.
The Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota Hilux GR Sport — premium trim variants commanding £45,000 to £55,000 — are particularly targeted due to their high residual values. Standard commercial specification Hilux and Ranger models remain priority export targets because their utilitarian specification and robust construction make them attractive in markets where durability and repairability are prioritised over luxury specification.
Most targeted pickup models UK
The Toyota Hilux leads on theft rate per registered vehicle, followed closely by the Ford Ranger. The VW Amarok — particularly the V6 TDI variants — has seen increasing theft rates as its UK registration numbers have grown. The Mitsubishi L200 and Isuzu D-Max complete the top five most targeted UK pickup platforms. Mercedes X-Class thefts were notable during its production period; its discontinuation has not eliminated its presence in theft data as the second-hand market remains active.
All current-generation pickups from these manufacturers are equipped with keyless entry as standard or optional equipment on mid and top trim levels. Entry-level commercial specification variants may retain conventional key entry, making them less vulnerable to relay attack — but still potentially targeted via physical methods on high-demand export models.
Export theft — stolen to order
UK pickup trucks — particularly the Hilux and Ranger — are stolen to specific order for export markets where UK-origin right-hand-drive pickups are sought after. West Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern European markets all have established demand channels for UK-sourced pickup trucks. Criminal export networks operate container facilities near UK ports, with stolen vehicles containerised within hours of theft and shipped within days. International law enforcement cooperation has improved but recovery of exported vehicles remains rare once containerisation occurs.
Stolen-to-order pickup operations mean thieves may specifically target your vehicle if it matches an active export order. A LockCar immobiliser that cannot be bypassed in the time available between theft and departure means your vehicle cannot be added to a container — regardless of how specific or determined the targeting.
Rural and agricultural theft
Farm and agricultural settings present distinct security challenges for pickup owners. Remote properties, limited CCTV, large perimeters, and the practical necessity of leaving vehicles in accessible locations all increase theft risk. Agricultural pickups may spend periods unattended in fields, yards, and outbuildings where physical access by criminals is straightforward. Keys left in vehicles during working operations — a common and understandable practice in isolated farm environments — create an obvious vulnerability.
LockCar’s anti-hijack mode is particularly relevant for agricultural operators. This mode automatically re-arms the immobiliser after a configurable time period — for example, 30 minutes after the engine has been started — requiring the driver to re-authenticate if the vehicle has been left running unattended. This prevents opportunistic theft of vehicles left idling or unattended in agricultural settings during working hours.
LockCar for pickup trucks
The LockCar i226 is the recommended unit for all pickup truck installations. Its 20A relay handles the higher-current starter and fuel pump circuits found in pickup diesel engines, including the Ford Ranger’s 2.0L EcoBlue and 3.0L V6, the Toyota Hilux’s 2.8L D-4D, and the VW Amarok’s 3.0L TDI V6. The isolated MCU communication architecture ensures that even if a criminal locates the immobiliser unit, bridging the wiring cannot bypass the relay break.
For pickup owners who also want 4G GPS tracking — particularly useful for export theft scenarios where the vehicle may be moved rapidly out of the area — the LockCar One Plus adds real-time location monitoring and remote immobilisation to the physical relay break. If your pickup moves unexpectedly overnight, you receive an immediate push notification and can view its live location from the app.

Does LockCar work on hardtop or canopy-fitted pickups?
Yes. LockCar installation is in the cab and engine bay — the presence of a hardtop, canopy, or tonneau cover does not affect installation or operation. All pickup body configurations are fully supported.
Can the anti-hijack timer be configured for agricultural use?
Yes. The anti-hijack re-arm period is configurable. Our engineers set this to your preferred interval during installation. Typical agricultural settings are 30 to 60 minutes. Contact us when booking to confirm your required configuration.
Will LockCar affect my pickup’s towing electrics or trailer connection?
No. LockCar installation targets the starter and fuel pump circuits. Towing electrics, towbar connections, and trailer brake controllers are on separate circuits that are not affected by the immobiliser installation.
