Mercedes theft across Sutton Coldfield
Sutton Coldfield has become a hotspot for keyless vehicle theft. The West Midlands region has the highest vehicle theft rate in the UK at 1,451 offences per 100,000 residents [citation:3]. In 2025 alone, West Midlands Police recorded 8,438 vehicle thefts, with affluent areas like Sutton Coldfield disproportionately targeted [citation:6].
Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, and AMG models are particularly attractive to thieves. Nationally, Mercedes-Benz ranks as the 5th most stolen brand with 3,856 thefts in 2025, and the C-Class and E-Class consistently appear in the top 15 most stolen models [citation:4][citation:6].
Following recent relay attacks in Streetly, West Midlands Police urge Sutton Coldfield Mercedes owners to install physical immobiliser protection. The factory keyless system can be bypassed using relay equipment available online for under £100. LockCar adds a physical layer that cannot be electronically defeated.
Recent relay attacks in Streetly — a real incident
In May 2025, two suspected car thieves on a motorbike attempted to steal a Mercedes from Beechcroft Crescent in Streetly, Sutton Coldfield. The incident was captured on home security camera footage shortly before midnight [citation:1].
The two would-be thieves, both wearing helmets, were suspected of attempting a relay theft — using a device to amplify the signal from a keyless fob to open and start the car. One suspect was captured heading toward the house while the other stood by the Mercedes’ driver’s door. They tried to get into the car for around 30 seconds, attempting front and back doors [citation:1].
The owner’s husband was alerted by a security camera notification. He banged on the window and shouted loudly, scaring the thieves off before they could succeed. The resident told Birmingham Live: “Both of our cars are Mercedes. The keyless entry function on the keys has already been switched off. Both sets of keys are kept in a safe, secure place inside the house, and we have steering wheel locks on both vehicles for added security.” She added that two BMWs had recently been stolen on their street, and the same gang was seen on Whitehorn Crescent [citation:1].
This incident highlights that even with keyless entry disabled, keys stored securely, and steering wheel locks fitted, additional physical immobiliser protection is essential. A LockCar immobiliser would have prevented the vehicle from starting even if the thieves had gained entry.
