Most keyless car security in Birmingham costs nothing to improve. Store both keys properly, check whether your fob can be put to sleep, and you have closed off the most common attack on your driveway. This page covers those steps first, then where they run out and what a fitted immobiliser adds.
Your car is listening for a key it cannot see
A keyless car is in a constant low level conversation with its fob. Walk up to it and the doors unlock, because the car has decided the key is close enough. That decision rests on signal strength, and signal strength can be faked.
This is why an alarm or a tracker does not solve the problem alone. Both assume the theft is already under way. Neither stops a car that believes it has been handed a legitimate key.
Every common attack works by satisfying the security your car came with. Anything you add that is not part of that conversation cannot be satisfied the same way.
Relay attack
One person stands near your hallway with an amplifier, another stands at the car. The car reads the boosted signal as a key in the driver’s hand. The free steps below are aimed at this attack, and it is the one you can do most about.
Key programming at the port
The diagnostic socket a garage uses to read fault codes can also write a new key. On many cars it sits under the steering column with nothing covering it. A pouch does nothing here, because your own key is never used.
Wiring access from outside
On some models a thief cuts into a headlight loom or a wing mirror feed to reach the vehicle network without opening a door. It is slower and messier, which is why delay matters more than people expect.
Seven things that cost nothing
Work through these before you spend a penny with us or anybody else. Fitting a hidden immobiliser while the fob still sits on a shelf inside the front door is spending money in the wrong order.
Move both keys away from the front of the house
Signal strength falls off quickly with distance and walls. A key in a back bedroom is a harder target than a key in a bowl by the front door. In a Birmingham terrace, where the door opens straight onto the pavement, that bowl sits about a metre from the street.
Find the spare key
People protect the key they use daily and forget the second one, usually in a kitchen drawer or a coat pocket in the hall. Whichever key sits nearest the wall is the one that matters.
Test the pouch you already own
Seal the key inside and walk to the car with it in your hand, then pull the door handle. If it opens, the pouch is not working. Linings wear out with daily folding, so test again every few months.
Read the fob section of the handbook
Many recent fobs sleep once they have been still for a while, and some let you switch keyless entry off with a button sequence or the infotainment menu. If yours does either, the relay problem is largely solved at no cost.
Ask about software at your next service
Several manufacturers have released security updates for models already on the road, and they are not always applied automatically. Ask with your registration to hand rather than in general terms.
Park to make the car awkward
Nose in against a wall, or blocked in behind the older car if you have two. On a permit street, a space under a working light with a clear view from a window beats one by an alley entrance, even if you walk further.
Point any camera at face height
Most driveway cameras sit high and record the tops of heads and a hood. One at head height near the gate gives the police something usable. West Midlands Police list their own measures on their vehicle theft prevention page.
Street parking is normal across most of Birmingham, and it is not a reason to skip the free steps. It changes which ones do the work: key distance and fob sleep matter more when the car sits ten metres from your living room wall.
Where the popular measures run out
Everything above is worth doing. None of it is complete, and the gaps are predictable.
A pouch depends on everyone in the house
It has to be used every night by everyone who drives the car, including whoever gets in at midnight. One forgotten evening removes the protection, and you will not know which evening it was.
Fob sleep only covers the fob
It shuts the relay route and does nothing about a key written at the diagnostic port or an attack through the wiring. Your key plays no part in either.
A tracker is a recovery tool
Trackers do good work after the car has gone, and insurers often like them. They do not prevent the start, and a signal only helps if somebody acts on it in time.
A steering lock is visible, and that is the point
A thief scanning a street sees it before committing, which is worth something. It will not stop a determined attack with the right tools, and it does nothing about a car dragged onto a flatbed.
Nothing on this page is a guarantee
Any security product, ours included, is a deterrent and a delay. The aim is to make your vehicle slower, noisier and less predictable than the one parked next to it, not to make it impossible to steal.
Sort security products by where they sit on the clock. Key handling and fob sleep act before the attack begins. A second immobiliser acts at the start attempt. An alarm acts during, a tracker acts after.
Most people who call us own something from the “after” end and nothing from the earlier, cheaper end.

When a second immobiliser earns its money
A hidden immobiliser sits out of sight inside the loom, with no keypad and nothing added to the dashboard. It holds the engine start blocked until it recognises your authorisation, and that authorisation has nothing to do with your car key. Defeating the factory security therefore achieves nothing on its own.
If your car has a metal key and no keyless entry, the relay problem does not apply and a steering lock is the sensible spend. If the car lives in a locked garage, or you are selling within a few months, the free steps are likely enough. If nobody in the house will reliably carry a tag, tell us, because the system only works when the right person disarms it.

What is the best keyless car security in Birmingham?
There is no single best product. The best result comes from doing the free things properly, then adding one thing that blocks the engine start. A hidden immobiliser covers more attacks than an alarm or a tracker, but it is still a delay rather than a guarantee.
Do Faraday pouches actually work?
A working pouch blocks the signal, so yes, while it is used. The two failure points are habit and wear. Test yours by sealing the key inside and trying the door handle. If the car opens, replace it.
Can I turn off keyless entry on my car?
On a lot of vehicles, yes. It is usually a button sequence on the fob or a setting in the vehicle menu, and it is described in the handbook rather than advertised. Newer fobs may also sleep automatically once they have been still for a while. Check yours before buying anything.
Is my car actually at risk, or am I worrying about nothing?
It depends on the model, the year and the specification, and we would rather you checked with a third party than took our word for it. Ask your insurer how they rate your vehicle, look up its Thatcham Research security rating, and ask your dealer about updates. If the answers come back reassuring, do nothing beyond the free steps.
Does a hidden immobiliser stop a relay attack?
It stops the outcome of one. The thief may still open the doors, because the relay satisfies the factory system. The engine start stays blocked, because our unit is waiting for something the relay cannot copy.
How much does a car immobiliser cost fitted in Birmingham?
The LockCar IC3262 TAG is £199 and the CAN-IMMO is £299, both including mobile fitting at your address. The One Plus, which adds 4G, GPS and cameras, is £699. There is no separate fitting charge and no call-out fee.
Will an aftermarket immobiliser affect my manufacturer’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers. If the car is still under warranty, call your dealer before you book. We will tell you exactly what we intend to connect to, so you can ask a specific question rather than a general one.
Will it cause fault codes or dashboard warning lights?
Not when the unit is matched to the vehicle and fitted correctly. Problems tend to come from generic parts spliced into the wrong circuit. It is why we ask for your registration first and occasionally say a vehicle is not suitable.
Do I need a tracker as well?
Not necessarily. Prevention and recovery are different jobs. If your insurer requires a tracker, fit one. If nobody is asking for one, most people get more from blocking the start than from watching a stolen car move on a map.
My car has already been stolen. What now?
Report it to the police and your insurer before anything else. Nothing on this page helps a vehicle that has already gone, and the next hour is better spent on those two calls than on reading about hardware.
