GPS tracker vs AirTag for car theft, why AirTags are not enough on their own
Apple AirTags have become widely used as a low-cost location tracking solution. Some vehicle owners fit them hoping to track a stolen car. However, AirTags are not designed for vehicle theft prevention or rapid recovery, and have significant limitations in this application. LockCar explains what AirTags can and cannot do, and why a dedicated 4G GPS tracker with relay immobiliser provides incomparably better protection.

LockCar explains what AirTags can and cannot do, and why a dedicated 4G GPS tracker with relay immobiliser provides incomparably better protection.
How AirTags work and their limitations for car theft
AirTags use Apple’s Find My network, which relies on Bluetooth signals detected by nearby Apple devices to update the AirTag’s estimated location. They do not have their own GPS chip or cellular connection. Location updates depend on an iPhone or other Apple device being near the AirTag, which in a moving vehicle could mean location updates only when the vehicle passes areas with dense iPhone users.
AirTags send an anti-stalking alert to any iPhone that detects the same AirTag nearby for an extended period. This means a thief with an iPhone may be alerted that an AirTag is in the vehicle they have stolen, potentially prompting them to locate and remove it.
AirTags update location only when they ping a nearby Apple device via Bluetooth. There is no guarantee of real-time or near-real-time updates, no movement alert capability, and no geofencing. For car theft response, these limitations make AirTags significantly less useful than a dedicated 4G GPS tracker.
What a dedicated 4G GPS tracker provides
A dedicated 4G GPS tracker including LockCar One Plus uses its own GPS chip for position calculation and its own 4G SIM for continuous data transmission. Position is updated every few seconds and transmitted directly to the platform server without depending on any third-party devices being nearby. Movement alerts are sent immediately when the vehicle moves. Geofencing triggers an alert the moment the vehicle crosses a defined boundary.
Crucially, LockCar One Plus includes a hardwired relay immobiliser that AirTags cannot replicate in any configuration. The relay break physically prevents engine start after a relay attack. No Apple product has or will have this capability.
