GPS tracker safety zones and geo-fences, how geofencing protects your vehicle and assets
Geofencing is one of the most practically useful features of any modern GPS tracker. A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a geographic area, from your home driveway to a construction site. When the tracked vehicle or asset crosses the boundary, you receive an immediate alert. LockCar’s 4G GPS systems support configurable geofencing with immediate push notifications to the owner or fleet manager’s smartphone.

How geofencing works
A geofence is a digital boundary defined by a set of GPS coordinates that forms a closed polygon around an area. The boundary can be any shape, from a simple circle around a property to a complex polygon following a site perimeter. Once defined in the GPS tracker app, the tracker continuously monitors whether the vehicle’s current GPS position is inside or outside the boundary.
When the vehicle moves from inside to outside the boundary, the tracker immediately sends a notification event to the platform server. The server processes the event and sends a push notification to the designated alert recipient’s smartphone. On LockCar One Plus, this typically happens within seconds of the boundary being crossed.
Geofence alerts can be configured for entry, exit, or both. An exit alert notifies when the vehicle leaves a safe zone. An entry alert notifies when the vehicle enters a specified area, such as a restricted zone or a customer site.
Practical geofencing applications
Home security geofencing creates a boundary around the property. Any movement of the vehicle outside this zone between, for example, 11pm and 6am triggers an immediate alert. This is the most effective way to detect relay theft in progress, often providing notification within seconds of the vehicle being moved. Combined with LockCar’s relay immobiliser, the geofence alert provides confirmation of a theft attempt even after the immobiliser has stopped the engine.
Fleet depot geofencing alerts the fleet manager when any vehicle leaves the depot outside scheduled operational hours. This provides both theft detection and unauthorised use detection. Site geofencing for construction or project sites verifies that vehicles are where they should be during working hours.
