Fleet vehicle security for UK businesses
Managing a fleet of vehicles in the UK means managing vehicle theft risk, driver safety, operational efficiency, and compliance — simultaneously. LockCar’s fleet security ecosystem combines hardwired relay immobilisers, 4G dashcam systems, real-time GPS tracking, and the LFM Fleet Monitoring Platform into a single, coherent solution purpose-built for UK business operators.

UK fleet operators — whether managing five vans or five hundred — face vehicle crime as a persistent operational risk. Relay theft of commercial vehicles, tool theft from parked vans, unauthorised vehicle use outside working hours, and the liability exposure from unmonitored driving behaviour are all costs that effective fleet security reduces. LockCar provides a complete, UK-manufactured fleet security stack that scales from a sole trader’s single van to a national distributor’s vehicle pool — with hardware, software, and support all from one supplier.
Fleet vehicle theft risk in the UK
Commercial vehicles are disproportionately represented in UK vehicle theft statistics relative to their share of the total vehicle population. Vans, pickups, and commercial SUVs are targeted both for the vehicles themselves and for the contents they carry. The West Midlands, London, Greater Manchester, and South Yorkshire are the highest-risk regions for commercial vehicle theft, but organised theft gangs operate nationally and no UK fleet operator is immune.
Fleet vehicles face additional risk factors that personal vehicles do not. They are often parked overnight in locations outside the owner’s direct sight — depots, building sites, client premises, or public streets in unfamiliar areas. Drivers may not follow the same security routines as they would with a personal vehicle. Multiple drivers sharing a single vehicle means security discipline varies. And the value of the contents — tools, equipment, stock, parcels — creates a theft target even when the vehicle itself is not the objective.
For businesses operating keyless commercial vehicles — increasingly the majority of new fleet purchases — relay attack risk is present from the moment the vehicle is delivered. Every modern Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter T6.1, and Mercedes Sprinter produced since approximately 2018 is equipped with keyless entry and is therefore vulnerable to relay attack from day one of fleet operation.
The true cost of fleet vehicle crime
Fleet vehicle theft costs extend well beyond the insurance claim. A stolen van means operational downtime while a replacement is sourced. It means lost tools and equipment if a replacement vehicle isn’t immediately equipped. It means missed service calls, delayed deliveries, or broken project timelines. For businesses operating on thin margins or under SLA agreements, a single theft incident can cost multiples of the vehicle’s own value in downstream operational impact.
Insurance premiums for commercial fleets in high-theft areas have risen significantly in response to the vehicle crime epidemic. Some fleet operators in the West Midlands and London have reported premium increases of 30–50% on rolling policies. Insurers are increasingly making aftermarket immobilisers a condition of cover on commercial fleet policies, particularly for high-value platforms like the Transit Custom and Sprinter.
Fleet immobilisers — the security foundation
LockCar’s fleet immobiliser programme provides hardwired relay breaks for all vehicles in your fleet, installed by our mobile engineers at your depot, site, or any accessible location. Fleet installations are coordinated as batched appointments to minimise vehicle downtime — typically, a fleet of up to ten vehicles can be fully equipped within a single working day across two or three installation slots.
For commercial fleets, the LockCar i226 is the baseline recommendation. Its 20A relay rating covers the full range of commercial vehicle starter circuit current draws, from compact vans through to 3.5-tonne platforms. The isolated MCU-to-immobiliser communication architecture is particularly relevant for fleet operations, where vehicles may be parked in less controlled environments. All fleet immobilisers are installed with hands-free authentication — drivers do not need to carry an additional tag or use an app to start the vehicle during normal working hours, but the system re-arms automatically when the vehicle is locked and parked.
4G dashcams for fleet visibility
LockCar’s 4G dashcam systems provide fleet managers with real-time visibility of every vehicle’s location and status. The LockCar Duo RH Plus and Duo LH Plus dual-camera systems cover both the forward-facing road view and the driver/interior — providing evidence for insurance claims, accident investigations, and driver behaviour monitoring. Live camera access through the LFM platform means fleet managers can view any vehicle’s feed at any time without alerting the driver.
For fleets where driver privacy is a consideration, LockCar camera systems can be configured to record only externally facing views. For compliance-focused operations such as taxis, private hire, and passenger transport, the dual-camera configuration provides the interior evidence capture required by many local licensing authorities.
LockCar Fleet Monitoring Platform (LFM)
The LockCar Fleet Monitoring Platform is a web-based dashboard that centralises data from all LockCar-equipped vehicles in your fleet. From the LFM interface, fleet managers can view real-time GPS locations for every vehicle on a live map, access camera feeds for individual vehicles, review trip history and route data, monitor driver behaviour metrics including harsh braking and acceleration events, and remotely immobilise any vehicle in the fleet if required.
The LFM also provides fleet-level immobilisation status — showing which vehicles are armed and which are currently active — and alerts for events including unauthorised movement outside of configured working hours, geofence breaches, and impact detection events from the dashcam sensors. All data is retained in the platform for configurable periods, providing a searchable archive for insurance claims and incident investigations.
The platform is available on web, and as the LFM iOS App for mobile fleet management. Fleet pricing for the LFM subscription is based on vehicle count — contact LockCar for a quote for five or more vehicles.
LockCar fleet apps
LockCar provides three dedicated mobile applications supporting different user roles in a fleet operation. The LockCar Android App and LockCar iOS App are the primary vehicle control and monitoring applications for individual drivers and vehicle owners — providing immobiliser status, GPS location, camera access, and alert management. The LFM iOS App is the fleet management interface for administrators, providing the centralised multi-vehicle dashboard with all LFM platform features accessible from a smartphone.
LockCar fleet product range
Can LockCar fit immobilisers to our entire fleet in one visit?
For larger fleets, we coordinate batched installation appointments to cover all vehicles with minimal downtime. Multiple engineers can work simultaneously on larger fleets. Contact us with your fleet size and location and we will provide a tailored installation schedule.
Does the LFM platform work with non-LockCar GPS trackers already on our fleet?
The LFM platform is designed for LockCar-equipped vehicles. It integrates natively with all LockCar 4G dashcam and immobiliser systems. Contact us to discuss integration options if your fleet already has third-party telematics hardware.
Can fleet drivers use the LockCar app to control their own vehicle?
Yes. Individual driver accounts can be created within the LockCar app system, with permissions set by fleet administrators. Drivers can arm and disarm their assigned vehicle’s immobiliser, view its location, and receive alerts. Fleet administrators retain the ability to remotely immobilise any vehicle regardless of driver app status.
Is the LFM platform GDPR compliant for UK fleet operators?
LockCar’s data processing practices are designed to meet UK GDPR requirements for fleet telematics. Driver location and camera data is processed for legitimate fleet management purposes. We recommend fleet operators maintain a clear driver data policy notifying staff of monitoring systems in use. Contact us for GDPR documentation support.
