YOUR CAR
CAN BE STOLEN
in under 60 seconds with no alarm triggered
Does car insurance actually cover keyless theft, or is there a catch in the small print?
Most comprehensive and Third Party, Fire and Theft policies do cover keyless car theft. The catch is not usually whether theft is covered, it is whether you met the security conditions your insurer quietly attached to your policy.
What your policy actually covers
Comprehensive policies and Third Party, Fire and Theft policies both cover vehicle theft, regardless of the method a thief used, as long as you have not been negligent under the terms of your policy. A relay attack, signal jamming, or an OBD port attack are all treated as theft in the same way as any other method.
Third Party Only cover does not include theft at all. If that is your policy level, a stolen vehicle is simply not covered, whatever method was used.
This is general information, not insurance advice specific to your circumstances. Your own policy wording is what actually governs your claim, so it is worth reading the theft and security sections before you ever need them.

Why some theft claims still get rejected
Rejections rarely happen because the theft did not occur. They usually happen because the circumstances or the paperwork did not meet the conditions written into the policy. Insurers can attach security warranties or endorsements to a policy, particularly for higher risk models, requiring a specific tracker or immobiliser to be fitted and switched on for cover to remain valid.
Missing or Unaccounted Keys
If a key cannot be located and it was not reported or secured, insurers can treat that as a failure to protect the vehicle.
Unmet Security Conditions
A tracker or immobiliser named as a policy condition has to actually be fitted and active, not just purchased and left uninstalled.
Vehicle Left Unsecured
Doors left unlocked, keys left in the car, or the vehicle parked somewhere that breaches the policy’s terms can all weaken a claim.
Why documentation matters as much as the device itself
Fitting a security device is only half the job. Insurers increasingly ask for proof: an invoice, an installation certificate, or evidence the device was active at the time of the theft. Without that paperwork, even a genuinely fitted device can be hard to demonstrate after the fact.
Every LockCar installation includes a full insurance certificate documenting the security measures fitted to your specific vehicle, which you can keep alongside your policy documents and hand to your insurer if a claim ever needs supporting evidence.
A relay immobiliser you cannot prove was fitted is weaker evidence than one you can. Store your LockCar certificate somewhere you would actually find it during a stressful claim, not just in an inbox you never check.

Frequently asked questions
Will fitting LockCar reduce my insurance premium?
Not automatically. Most insurers do not offer a guaranteed discount for aftermarket devices, but for higher risk vehicles a fitted device can be the difference between being offered cover at all and being declined. Check with your specific insurer.
Does a Third Party Only policy cover keyless theft?
No. Third Party Only cover does not include theft of your own vehicle at all, regardless of the method used. You would need Third Party, Fire and Theft or Comprehensive cover.
What should I do the moment I discover my car has been stolen?
Report it to the police first to get a crime reference number, then contact your insurer as soon as possible. Keep your installation certificate and any relevant documentation ready to support your claim.
Is this page insurance advice?
No. This is general information to help you understand common policy conditions. Always read your own policy wording and speak to your insurer for advice specific to your vehicle and circumstances.
