A PIN code alarm is not an alarm
The products people call PIN code alarms make no noise. They are hidden immobilisers. You press a sequence on buttons the car already has, the steering wheel controls, the stalk, the pedals, and the engine will not start until it is entered. The unit reads those presses off the CAN bus, the network your car uses to pass messages between its own modules.
Worth getting straight before you spend anything, because alarms and immobilisers sit in the same aisle and do opposite jobs. An alarm reports a theft already under way. An immobiliser stops the car moving. If your worry is the car vanishing off a Selly Oak street overnight, the noise is the part you can skip.
Button sequence systems are usually the priciest line on a security quote, and plenty of drivers dislike tapping a code every time they set off. Both are fair reasons to look elsewhere. Neither is a reason to buy the first cheap module you find.
The generic online module
Cheap CAN bus immobiliser kits are everywhere. CAN messages differ between manufacturers, model years and sometimes trim levels, so a module with generic firmware can sit on your network sending traffic it does not understand.
The OBD dongle
Anything that plugs into the diagnostic port sits in the first place a thief looks, usually under the steering column with nothing covering it. A device that unplugs in two seconds will be unplugged.
The DIY splice
The fault we get called out to most is a crimp connector squeezed onto a CAN pair. The twist in that pair is there for a reason. Break it and you get intermittent warning lights, and the diagnostic time to trace them costs more than the module did.
Five things that cost nothing, including one phone call
We sell immobilisers. We would still rather you did all of this first, because for a fair number of cars in Birmingham it is enough, and because you can do it tonight instead of waiting for a fitting slot.
Move the keys away from the front of the house
A relay attack extends your key’s signal from wherever it sits to whoever is standing at the car. The bowl by the front door is the worst place for it. Upstairs, at the back, inside a metal tin you already own. One minute, and it defeats the most common attack on a keyless car.
Find out if your key goes to sleep
Many fobs built in recent years have a motion sensor and stop transmitting after sitting still. Some need switching on with a button combination. Your handbook will say, and if it does not, your dealer’s service desk will tell you over the phone.
Park to make the car awkward to remove
Nose in, wheels turned to full lock. If you run two cars, put the less desirable one behind the better one. On the terraced streets around Sparkhill and Kings Heath, parking tight to a wall on the driver’s side makes working in the cabin unpleasant. Thieves want quick and quiet.
Empty the van overnight
Plenty of the van jobs we hear about in the West Midlands were after tools rather than the vehicle. Take them in, and register the ones with serial numbers free on Immobilise, the property register UK police forces check, so a recovered drill can be traced back to you.
Ring your insurer before you buy anything
The call people skip. Ask two things: does an aftermarket immobiliser change my premium, and do you require a recognised type or professional installation. Some policies care a great deal, some not at all. Five minutes tells you which sort you have, and it may change what you buy.

Where the free steps stop working
Anyone selling you something will tell you the free measures are useless. They are not. They fail in specific, knowable situations, and it is worth working out which apply to you before deciding to spend.
They rely on you every night

Advice about turning your wheels and blocking the drive assumes you have a drive. Across large parts of B12, B13 and B18 there are permit bays and nothing else. You park where there is a space, facing whichever way you arrived.

If your car is keyless, sought after and parked on a public street, the free steps narrow the odds and then stop. That is where a fitted immobiliser earns its money. What the fitted price actually buys
The hardware is the cheap part. You are paying for a unit programmed against your make, model and year rather than a generic one, wiring soldered and sleeved into the loom instead of crimped onto it, the module hidden somewhere that takes trim removal to reach, and every factory function tested before we leave. You also keep the number of the engineer who did the work.

Is there a cheap car PIN code alarm alternative using the CAN bus in Birmingham?

Do I actually need an immobiliser or am I being sold something?
Plenty of people do not need one. If your car is older, has no keyless entry, lives in a locked garage and is not on any theft-to-order list, the free steps and a decent steering lock are a sensible stopping point. Ring your insurer and ask what they recommend for your vehicle before spending anything with us or anyone else.
Are cheap CAN bus immobilisers from eBay any good?
Some of the hardware is fine. The problem is that CAN traffic differs between manufacturers and model years, so generic firmware may not behave properly on your car. Add a spliced joint into a twisted CAN pair and you can end up with warning lights and a diagnostic bill larger than the saving.
Will an aftermarket immobiliser cause CAN bus faults on my car?
A correctly programmed unit, wired properly, should not. Faults come from three things: firmware that does not match the vehicle, power taken from the wrong circuit so modules stay awake and flatten the battery, and crimp connectors on the CAN pair. All three are installation problems rather than something inherent to the idea.
Can I fit a CAN bus immobiliser myself?
If you are confident with automotive wiring and the unit is genuinely programmed for your vehicle, it is possible. Two warnings. Anywhere you can reach easily is somewhere a thief can reach easily, so concealment is most of the value. And when something goes wrong on a modern car, the symptom often shows up somewhere unrelated, weeks later.
Will fitting one affect my manufacturer’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers. If the vehicle is still under warranty, call your dealer before booking. We will tell you exactly what we intend to connect to, so you can ask them a specific question and get a straight answer.
Does it work on a keyless car?
Yes, and those are the vehicles it exists for. If your car unlocks as you walk towards it, it is the type most exposed to a relay attack, because the attack extends a signal the car is already listening for. A hidden immobiliser takes no part in that exchange, so satisfying the factory system achieves nothing.
What if I lose the TAG or my phone battery dies?
Keep a spare TAG at home. On the CAN-IMMO you can disarm from the app over Bluetooth, and on the IC3262 a paired trust device such as a smart watch or smart ring can act as your authorisation. We show you the backup method before we leave.
How long does fitting take and do you come to me?
