Message us on WhatsAppCAN bus immobilisers — how they work and what to check
A CAN bus immobiliser joins your car’s own network and holds the start condition until it recognises you. Here’s what that means in practice, and how to tell a well-engineered module from a cheap one.
Keyless entry made cars faster to steal. A relay attack takes under a minute, needs no key and leaves no damage — the factory immobiliser is satisfied because, as far as it can tell, the correct key answered. The CAN bus immobiliser is the aftermarket’s response: a small module on the car’s data network that adds a second authorisation step the relayed key can’t complete. Here’s how it works, and what separates a good implementation from a bad one.
What the CAN bus approach gets right
The CAN bus is the two-wire network every module in a modern car uses to talk to the others — engine management, gearbox, ABS, body control, instrument cluster. A security module can join that conversation and see the start request without anyone cutting into the loom. That gives it three real advantages: the installation is plug-in and reversible, there is no visible hardware for a thief to find and rip out, and because the module works with the vehicle’s own start logic rather than around it, the same approach covers cars, vans, EVs, hybrids and HGVs instead of only specific models.
Four things to check before you buy any CAN system
Generic firmware with no vehicle profile
CAN message formats are manufacturer-specific and often model-year-specific. A module that guesses at message IDs can trigger dashboard warnings, stored fault codes or intermittent no-start conditions on vehicles it was never validated against. Ask whether there is a validated profile for your exact make, model and year — and what happens if there isn’t.
A module that never sleeps
The most common complaint about any aftermarket electronics is a flat battery. A module that keeps polling after the car has shut down will drain a healthy battery over a week of standing. A properly built one follows the vehicle’s own sleep state, and the installer should be able to give you a measured quiescent draw from your car rather than a figure from a datasheet.
Cut and spliced wiring
An installation that cuts into the loom is hard to undo, awkward in a warranty conversation and visible to any main dealer doing diagnostic work. Insist on a fit that uses the vehicle’s existing connectors and can be removed to leave the loom as it was — and get an installation certificate, since that’s also what most insurers ask for when applying a security discount.
A disarm method your household won’t use
Security that’s annoying gets switched off. Anything requiring a memorised sequence has to be taught to a partner, a valet, a mechanic — and gets entered wrong at the worst moment. A proximity tag, phone or smartwatch removes that entirely: you carry it, you walk up, the car behaves normally. And it should re-arm on its own when you leave, not wait to be told.
Factory keyless system vs LockCar CAN-IMMO
| Feature | Factory system only | LockCar CAN-IMMO |
|---|---|---|
| Authorisation to start | Key signal alone | Key plus independent trust device |
| Relay attack | Car starts | Start stays blocked |
| Key cloning via OBD | Cloned key starts the car | Cloned key fails the second check |
| Disarming | Key fob | Proximity tag hands-free |
| Partner/valet use | Spare key | Second tag, app access, valet mode |
| Lockout risk | None | None — no PIN, backup methods |
| App & alerts | Limited or none | Full app |
| GPS tracking | Subscription, if offered | 4G option, or ONE Plus |
| Installation | n/a | Plug-in, no cut wires, reversible |
| Typical fitted price | Included in the car | From £320 |
One honest limit, because you’ll hear it from any installer worth using: no immobiliser makes a vehicle theft-proof. A crew with a low-loader can take any car, whatever is fitted to it. What a well-installed CAN system does is remove the fast, silent, keyless method behind most UK vehicle theft and force the slow, loud, visible alternative instead. If your vehicle is older, imported or heavily modified and has no validated CAN profile, we’ll say so and fit the standalone IC3ST instead.
LockCar CAN-IMMO — £149 | IC3ST — £139 | IS357 — £149
Vehicle-matched CAN profile. Hands-free proximity disarming. Full app control with optional 4G and GPS. Plug-in and reversible. UK-wide installation by the engineer who built it.
