Vehicle theft in Dudley and the Black Country
West Midlands Police charged two men with 130 vehicle theft offences following a seven-month spree across Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Staffordshire. A third person was charged with handling stolen goods. That single case is a useful illustration of how this crime actually works: a handful of people, an established method, and the same borough hit repeatedly until someone stops them.
The broader trend is genuinely improving. Recorded vehicle theft across the West Midlands fell to 12,196 offences in 2025, down 8.8% on the year before and 15.5% over two years. Honest John’s crime mapping nonetheless still identifies Dudley, alongside Birmingham and Wolverhampton, as part of the region’s concentrated vehicle crime area.
Ford remains the most stolen brand in the region with 2,375 vehicles in 2025, despite a 19.4% drop. That matters here more than it does in Solihull: the Black Country’s roads are full of Fiestas, Focuses, Kugas and Transits rather than Range Rovers, and the thing being stolen is usually somebody’s only car.

Terraced streets, no driveways
Much of Dudley, Netherton and Brierley Hill was built before car ownership was universal. The car sits on the road, often not directly outside your own front door. Nobody looks twice at someone standing next to it.

In a terrace, the hallway hook is often less than three metres from the kerb. A relay amplifier does not need to get close — but in a terrace it is close anyway, which makes the attack trivially easy.

Volume brands are stolen in volume — for parts, for onward sale, and for use in other crime. Ford led the West Midlands at 2,375 thefts in 2025, with Vauxhall and Nissan both in the regional top ten.
Mitsubishi: the sharp riser
Mitsubishi thefts rose 64% across the region in 2025 and, adjusted for vehicles registered, became the most at-risk brand at 27 thefts per 1,000. If you own an Outlander or an L200 this changed recently.
Alarms nobody responds to
On a busy road a car alarm is background noise. Modern theft rarely triggers one anyway — no glass is broken and no door is forced. An immobiliser does not need anyone to hear it.

Authorisation comes from a proximity tag in your pocket or your paired phone, with a PIN sequence through the car’s own buttons as an offline backup. Nothing depends on your car key, so relaying or cloning the key achieves nothing at all.

My car has no keyless entry. Am I already safe from relay attack?
Safe from relay specifically, yes. Not safe generally. Older vehicles face key cloning, OBD port key programming and forced ignition instead. Different method, same empty parking space. The immobiliser configuration we fit differs depending on which threat applies to your car, so tell us the year and model.
Will it drain the battery if I do not drive for a fortnight?
Standby draw is a few milliamps, which a healthy battery handles for weeks. Your car’s own alarm and body control modules use considerably more. If your battery already struggles after a week standing, that is worth addressing regardless of what we fit.
