Birmingham is the worst city in the United Kingdom for van theft, and one of the most concentrated areas for vehicle crime in the West Midlands. We are based here. Vehicle theft in Birmingham: the numbers
Analysis of DVLA data by the insurer Tempcover placed Birmingham at the top of the national league table for van theft, with 1,446 vans stolen across 2024 and 2025 — more than any other place in the United Kingdom. Walsall and Wolverhampton also appear in the same top ten. The Ford Transit 350 is the single most stolen van model in the country, accounting for around six percent of all van thefts nationally.
For cars, Honest John’s crime mapping identifies Birmingham city centre as the region’s worst area with around 1,800 recorded offences, and Birmingham west at roughly 1,131 crimes per 10,000 cars. Across the West Midlands as a whole, the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Vehicle Theft Index 2026 recorded 12,196 vehicle theft offences in 2025.
There is genuine good news in that data. Regional vehicle theft fell 8.8% year on year and 15.5% across two years, and van thefts in Birmingham dropped from 797 in 2024 to 649 in 2025. Enforcement is working. But 649 vans in a single year is still roughly twelve a week, and Ford remains the most stolen brand in the region at 2,375 vehicles despite a 19.4% fall.
The pattern underneath those numbers is what matters for deciding what to fit. Modern theft in Birmingham is overwhelmingly electronic — relay attacks on keyless vehicles, key cloning through the OBD port, and CAN injection through a headlight or wing mirror loom. None of it involves breaking glass, and none of it is stopped by your factory immobiliser.

City centre and Jewellery Quarter
Apartment blocks with shared underground parking. The risk here is not the street — it is that one tailgated entry gives a thief unobserved access to forty cars at once, with a roller shutter between them and any witness. B1, B3, B15, B18.
Inner terraces
Sparkhill, Small Heath, Bordesley Green, Handsworth. On-street parking with no driveway, and a hallway key hook within easy amplifier range of the kerb. Volume cars, volume theft. B8, B10, B11, B21.
Suburban driveways
Harborne, Moseley, Edgbaston, Sutton fringe. Detached and semi-detached with the car eight metres from the front door. Higher value vehicles, and the classic two-person relay setup. B13, B15, B17, B29.
Trade vans anywhere
Birmingham is the UK’s number one city for van theft. If a Transit or Sprinter sits outside your house or at a unit overnight, your exposure is higher than any of the categories above regardless of postcode.
The Spaghetti Junction problem
M6 J6 sits in the middle of the city, feeding the M5, M42 and A38. A vehicle taken in Aston is on a motorway in under five minutes. Recovery odds fall sharply with every one of them.
Export routes
Birmingham’s position on the container and freight network is part of why organised theft concentrates here. A vehicle stolen for export is rarely found, which is why prevention outranks recovery in this city specifically.
What gets taken in this city
Ford leads the West Midlands table with 2,375 vehicles stolen in 2025 — Fiestas, Focuses, Kugas and, above all, Transits. That is not a prestige-car problem. It is the most ordinary vehicles on Birmingham’s roads being taken in the greatest numbers.
Mitsubishi is the sharpest riser in the region, up 64% in a single year, and once adjusted for how many are registered it became the most at-risk brand in the West Midlands at 27 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. Toyota rose 7.6%. Land Rover fell 37.6% to 483 thefts but remains high-risk per vehicle registered, which matters in Edgbaston and the Sutton fringe.

Birmingham questions
I park in a secure underground car park in the city centre. Am I covered?
Partly, and less than most residents assume. A gated car park stops casual access, but it also removes witnesses. Once someone has tailgated a resident through the shutter they have unobserved time with dozens of vehicles and no passing public. If anything, apartment parking makes an immobiliser more valuable rather than less, because the deterrent has to live inside the car rather than in the environment around it.
I park on the street with no driveway. Can you still fit it?
Yes, and it is most of what we do across the inner city. We work kerbside as long as the car can sit legally parked for a few hours. Tell us the street when you book — if access is genuinely too tight we will say so before we set off rather than after we arrive.
Is a tracker not the better buy, given how fast they reach the M6?
Speed is the argument against relying on a tracker alone. Spaghetti Junction sits in the middle of the city, so a stolen vehicle is on a motorway within minutes and often out of the region before it is reported. Tracking is genuinely useful for recovery and we will fit both if you want both — but if you are buying one thing, buy the one that stops the car moving.
My van is my business. Can you fit outside working hours?
Yes — early, late or weekends. The van earns during the day and we would rather not be the reason you lose a job. If you run several vehicles from a yard in Tyseley, Aston or Nechells, we fit them in sequence in a single visit with one certificate per vehicle.
Can a thief find and bypass it?
No security device is impossible to defeat, and treat anyone who claims otherwise with caution. What changes the outcome is time. With no visible indicator and no consistent fitting position, locating and bypassing the unit takes far longer than the minute or two a thief will spend on a Birmingham street before moving to an easier car.
Why use a local installer rather than a national company?
