Message us on WhatsAppThe best vehicle security system on 2 x CAN bus, LIN bus and ADC bus with PIN code: no pin, no start, and the best cheap car immobiliser alternative
LockCar builds a vehicle security system that reads two CAN channels, the LIN bus and an ADC input, holds the engine start blocked until it sees your PIN code, and costs a fraction of the best known immobilisers. No pin, no start. This page explains the engineering behind that, what it does not do, and how automotive electricians can get hold of it.
Modern cars are two networks, not one
Every car sold here for decades has carried a factory immobiliser. It works. The trouble is what it checks: that a recognised key is present. Relay attacks, key cloning and diagnostic port programming all pass that check. The factory system is not beaten in those thefts. It is satisfied.
So a second layer has to sit outside the conversation between key and car. A PIN code immobiliser does that. It watches the vehicle’s own network for a sequence of button presses the owner chooses, and holds engine start blocked until it sees them. No key satisfies it.
Here is where most aftermarket units run into trouble. A modern vehicle is not one bus. There is a powertrain network carrying engine and transmission traffic, and a body or comfort network carrying doors, stalks, seats and steering wheel controls. A gateway module sits between them and filters what crosses. A single channel unit can only see one side of that gateway. If the buttons you want to use for the PIN live on the comfort side and the start authority lives on the powertrain side, one channel leaves you stuck.
Two CAN channels let the unit listen on one network and act on the other, without depending on the gateway passing messages through. LIN covers the slower subsystems where stalks and mirror switches often live. ADC reads a raw analogue voltage when neither bus offers anything usable. Three ways in means far fewer vehicles come back as unsupported.
Relay attack
One person stands near the hallway with an amplifier, another at the car. The vehicle believes the key is in the driver’s hand. Doors open, engine starts, and nothing about the factory security has failed.
Key programming
A tool plugged into the diagnostic port writes a fresh key to the vehicle in seconds. The thief leaves on a key the car now treats as genuine. Your original can be locked in a safe. It changes nothing.
Why an alarm is the wrong tool
An alarm reports a theft already under way, on a street where nobody investigates a siren at three in the morning. A PIN code immobiliser is silent and stops the engine instead. Different jobs, and buyers pick the wrong one often.
Four things that cost nothing, including two phone calls
Before fit these units. We would still rather you did all of this before ordering, because for some vehicles it is enough, and because it takes an evening rather than a fitting slot.
Move the keys away from the front of the house
A relay attack extends your key’s signal from wherever it sits to whoever stands at the car. The bowl by the front door is the worst place for it. Upstairs, at the back, inside a metal tin you already own. One minute, and it removes the most common attack on a keyless car.
Find out if your key goes to sleep
Many fobs built in recent years carry a motion sensor and stop transmitting after sitting still. Some need switching on with a button combination. Your handbook will say, and if it does not, your dealer’s service desk will tell you over the phone in two minutes.
Ring your insurer before you order
Ask two things: does an aftermarket immobiliser change my premium, and do you require a specific accreditation or a professional install. Some policies care a great deal, some not at all. If yours names a particular approved category, buy a product that holds it. We would rather you knew now than after the fitting.
Ask us for the compatibility check
This costs nothing and applies to trade buyers too. Send the registration, or the make, model and year, and we will tell you which of the three interfaces your vehicle needs, which buttons it exposes and how straightforward the fit is. If a vehicle is awkward we will say so rather than sell a unit that will be coming back out.
Move the keys. Free, takes a minute, and it works tonight while you are still deciding what to buy.
What this technology does not do
Any security product is a deterrent and a delay. Nothing here is a guarantee, and the aim is to make a vehicle slower and less predictable than the one parked next to it. A manufacturer that will not list the gaps is a manufacturer worth less trust, so here they are.
It does not stop a flatbed
An immobiliser blocks engine start. A vehicle can still be winched onto a truck and taken. If organised removal is the realistic worry, prevention needs pairing with tracking, which is a different product and a different price.
It does not stop a break-in
Somebody can still put a window through for a laptop, take badges, wheels or a catalytic converter. A silent immobiliser protects the vehicle from being driven off. Nothing beyond that.
Some gateways are stubborn
Two CAN channels solve most gateway problems. Not all of them. A small number of vehicles, usually recent premium models with heavily locked networks, still limit what any aftermarket device can read. That is why the compatibility check exists.
You carry something, or you memorise something
The TAG unit means carrying a fob. The CAN unit means your phone or an optional proximity TAG. A memorised button sequence needs nothing carried at all. That is a genuine advantage of the sequence approach and we will not pretend otherwise.
It is not an insurance approval
The LockCAR CAN-IMMO immobiliser is to prevent and make it harder for the car to be stolen by starting the engine or locking the gearbox. But if the car is stolen it can no longer be stopped by an immobiliser.
The install is most of the value
A concealed module soldered into the loom behaves very differently from the same hardware crimped onto a twisted CAN pair behind a trim panel. Anywhere a fitter can reach in five minutes is somewhere a thief can reach in five minutes.
Five approaches, side by side
This compares engineering approaches rather than brands. Prices for anything other than our own products vary too much between sellers to quote, so they are described instead of priced.
| Approach | Vehicle coverage | Install effort | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory security alone | Every vehicle | None | ✗ Satisfied by a relayed signal or a newly programmed key |
| Physical relay cutoff | Almost universal | Heavy, one circuit cut and rejoined | ✓ Breaks a circuit without touching the network, though the wiring is findable |
| Single CAN channel unit | Limited by the gateway | Moderate | ✗ Sees one side of the vehicle only, so some models come back unsupported |
| Memorised button sequence | Wide | Moderate | ✓ Blocks starting, nothing to carry, and some products hold insurer accreditation |
| 2 x CAN, LIN and ADC system | Widest of the five | Moderate, one part number covers more of the fleet | ✓ Reads on one network and blocks on the other, with an analogue fallback |
Cheaper does not win every column. A memorised sequence beats us on one point that matters to some drivers: you carry nothing and there is no battery to go flat. Choose on how the vehicle will be disarmed day to day, then on price.
Three units, one fitted price each
Every price below is the fitted price at your address. There is no separate fitting charge and no call-out fee. The difference between them is how the vehicle is disarmed, and how much goes in one box.

What the fitted price actually buys
The module is the cheap part. You are paying for firmware matched to your make, model and year rather than something generic, wiring soldered and sleeved into the loom instead of crimped onto it, the unit concealed somewhere that takes trim removal to reach, and every factory function tested before we leave. Valet mode is set up and explained so you can hand the car to a garage without handing over your security.
The CAN-IMMO holds no GPS, no 4G and no camera. If you want tracking and live cameras in the same unit, that is the LockCar One Plus at £699, or something from the 4G dashcam range.
Skip it if your car is older, non-keyless and worth little more than the immobiliser, because the free steps and a steering lock are proportionate. Skip it if the car lives in a locked garage or a barriered car park every night. Skip it if you are selling within months. And if your insurer names a specific approved category, buy a product that holds it, even though that costs more than we charge.
Undecided between the three? Run the registration through the LockCar vehicle check, or read the immobiliser buying guide first.
For automotive electricians and workshops
If you fit security for a living, the problem with most CAN based immobilisers is stock risk. You buy a part number, it covers one bus, and a third of the vehicles that come through the door turn out to be unsupported. The unit sits on the shelf until the firmware is outdated.
Two CAN channels, LIN and an ADC input change that arithmetic. One part number covers a much wider slice of what actually rolls in, from a keyless hatchback to a 24V tipper. The units are reprogrammable, so a job that falls through does not write off the stock. And because the interface is chosen at programming time, you are not committing to an approach before you have the vehicle in front of you.
LockCAR provides support. If you hit a gateway that will not cooperate, tell us the model and we will look at it. That is worth more on a difficult afternoon than any datasheet.
Compatibility before you buy
Send a registration or a model list and we will come back with what each vehicle needs. No charge, and no obligation. Use it to quote a customer before you have committed to anything.
Reprogrammable stock
A unit programmed for one vehicle can be reprogrammed for another. Stock stays useful, which matters when you are buying in small quantities rather than by the pallet.
Technical support from the maker
For trade terms, quantity pricing and installer documentation, contact us directly and we will set it out in writing rather than quote a number on a web page that goes stale.
Fitted at your address
Every CAN-IMMO can be fitted where the car already is, which for most customers means a driveway, a work car park or an industrial estate. Most installations take a few hours, depending on how much trim has to come apart to route the wiring out of sight.
Our engineers are based in the West Midlands, so the shortest lead times are local. If you want fitting details and timings for the city itself, that is on the car immobiliser Birmingham page, with the same information for Sutton Coldfield and Walsall on their own pages. Elsewhere in the UK, send your postcode with the registration and we will tell you honestly what the travel looks like before you commit.
Two practical notes. Have both keys available on the day, because the unit is tested against them. And if your battery is already marginal, say so when you book, since the car sits on ignition for part of the job and we will bring a support unit.

Questions people actually ask us
What is the best vehicle security system on 2 x CAN bus, LIN bus and ADC bus with PIN code, and is it a cheap car immobiliser alternative?
Our answer is the LockCar CAN-IMMO at £299 fitted, or the IC3262 at £199 if you would rather carry a TAG than use a phone. Both block engine start until they see your authorisation, both hide with no keypad or LED, and both cost well below the best known immobilisers.
Why does two CAN channels matter?
Because a modern vehicle splits into a powertrain network and a body network with a gateway between them. A single channel device sees one side. Two channels let the unit read your button presses on the comfort network and hold start authority on the powertrain side, without waiting for the gateway to pass messages across.
Do I have to type a PIN every time I drive?
YES. This is the main function of a CAN BUS immobilizer, at each start the pin code must be entered. But optionally LockCAR CAN-IMMO can be deactivated from the Mobile APP or automatically with the help of the optional proximity TAG as you approach the car. The sequential approach is MAIN if you prefer not to have anything on you.
Should I buy an immobiliser at all?
Not always. If the vehicle is older, has no keyless entry, sleeps in a locked garage and is not on any theft to order list, the free steps in section two and a decent steering lock are a sensible stopping point. Ring your insurer and ask what they recommend for your specific vehicle before spending money with us or anyone else.
Can I buy the units trade as an automotive electrician?
Yes. Contact us with the sort of work you do and roughly what volume you expect, and we will send trade terms and installer documentation in writing. We do not publish quantity pricing on the site because it moves, and a stale number on a web page helps nobody.
