Are magnetic GPS trackers waterproof, and what is the alternative?
Magnetic GPS trackers offer a quick-attach, no-wiring solution for tracking vehicles and assets. But their waterproofing varies significantly by model, and UK weather conditions mean inadequate protection leads to premature failure. This guide explains what to look for in a waterproof magnetic GPS tracker, what IP ratings actually mean in practice, and why LockCar’s hardwired 4G GPS is a more reliable long-term solution for vehicle applications.
What IP ratings mean for GPS trackers
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are the standardised measure of a device’s resistance to dust and water. The two digits after IP indicate dust protection (0 to 6) and water protection (0 to 9). IP67 means the device is fully dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water up to one metre for 30 minutes. IP68 indicates protection at greater depths or longer durations as specified by the manufacturer. IPX5 or IPX6 means protection from water jets but not immersion.
For a magnetic GPS tracker attached to the underside of a vehicle, road spray, puddle water, car wash exposure, and winter weather are all relevant. An IPX4 rating (splash-resistant only) is inadequate for this application. IP67 is the minimum practical standard for magnetic trackers intended for external vehicle attachment in UK conditions. Always check the manufacturer’s test specification rather than assuming the IP rating covers all use scenarios.
Limitations of magnetic GPS trackers
Beyond waterproofing, magnetic GPS trackers have several limitations compared to hardwired solutions. They rely on a battery that requires periodic charging or replacement, typically every one to four weeks depending on the tracking frequency configured. A depleted battery means no tracking until recharged. They can be removed by a thief who knows to look for them, which limits their effectiveness as a security device. The magnetic attachment strength varies by surface and can fail on textured or non-ferrous surfaces.
Magnetic trackers are best suited to temporary or flexible tracking requirements, asset tracking where hardwiring is not practical, or applications where the tracking device needs to move between multiple vehicles or assets regularly. For permanent vehicle security applications, a hardwired 4G GPS integrated into the vehicle’s power circuit provides more reliable operation and cannot be casually removed.
LockCar hardwired GPS versus magnetic trackers
LockCar One Plus and Duo RH Plus include a hardwired 4G GPS module that draws power from the vehicle’s own electrical system. It operates continuously without batteries, cannot be casually removed without tools and knowledge of the installation location, and is not subject to weathering because it is installed internally. The GPS accuracy and update frequency are equivalent to or better than premium magnetic trackers.
For UK vehicle owners and fleet operators who want permanent, reliable 4G GPS tracking combined with relay immobiliser protection and dashcam recording, LockCar’s hardwired approach is more appropriate than any magnetic tracker regardless of the magnetic unit’s IP rating.
