Key cloning protection stops a thief from programming a new key to your car or extending the signal from your existing one. LockCar fits hidden systems across Birmingham, from £199 including fitting, with a 12 month warranty. Most installations take a few hours.
Key cloning is quiet, fast and common
Key cloning means making a new key that your car treats as genuine. Thieves do it in one of two ways: by plugging into the diagnostic port under your steering wheel to program a blank key, or by using a relay device to extend your key’s signal from inside your house to the car. Both methods take under a minute and leave no broken glass.
The factory immobiliser in almost every modern car is designed to prevent the engine starting without a recognised key. It does not distinguish between your key and a cloned one, and it cannot tell the difference between a relayed signal and your actual key in the driver’s hand. Once the car accepts the signal, the immobiliser disarms and the engine starts.
A tracker reports where the car has gone. An alarm makes a noise after the door has opened. A steering lock is a visible deterrent, but it can be cut or broken in seconds. None of these stop the engine from starting. The only thing that stops a cloned key from driving away is a second, hidden immobiliser that the thief does not know exists and cannot see.
Every common attack works by satisfying the factory immobiliser. A second, hidden immobiliser is not part of that conversation, so satisfying the factory system achieves nothing.
Relay attack
One person stands near your hallway with an amplifier, another stands at the car. The car believes the key is in the driver’s hand. Doors open, engine starts.
Key cloning via OBD
A device plugged into the diagnostic port writes a fresh key to the vehicle in seconds. The thief drives away on a key the car now treats as genuine. This works even if your original key is not nearby.
OBD port attack
The port a garage uses to read fault codes can also reprogram security. On many vehicles it sits under the steering column with nothing protecting it.
What you can do for free
These steps cost nothing and reduce your risk. Do them first. If they are not enough, then consider paying for hardware.
Store keys away from the door
Keep your car keys as far from the front door and external walls as possible. The relay amplifier needs to be within a few metres of the key to work. A Faraday pouch or box blocks the signal entirely and costs less than a tenner.
Fit an OBD port lock
A physical lock over your diagnostic port stops a thief plugging in a programmer. Most cost between £20 and £50 and take five minutes to fit. It is not a complete solution, but it blocks one of the two main attack routes.
Park in well-lit areas
Thieves want to work without being seen. A well-lit driveway or street, or a car park under a light, makes relay and OBD attacks riskier. It does not stop a determined thief, but it makes them more likely to pick the car next to yours.
A Faraday pouch, an OBD lock and good parking habits cost under £50 combined and take minutes to implement. For many drivers, that is enough. If you are still concerned after doing these, then consider a hidden immobiliser.
What the free steps do and do not cover
A Faraday pouch only works while your key is inside it. The moment you take the key out to drive, the signal is available. If you forget to put the key back, or if the pouch wears out, the protection stops.
An OBD port lock is a physical barrier. A thief with a crowbar or a screwdriver can break it, but it takes time and makes noise. It also does nothing to stop a relay attack, because relay attacks do not use the OBD port.
Good parking habits are free and effective at reducing opportunities, but they do not protect you when you are at work, at the shops, or anywhere else you park during the day. Night-time theft is common, but daytime theft happens too.
The free steps are worth doing. They are not a substitute for a hidden immobiliser if your car is a high-risk model.

How much is key cloning protection fitted in Birmingham?
The LockCar IC3262 TAG is £199 and the CAN-IMMO is £299. The One Plus, which adds 4G, GPS tracking and live cameras, is £699. Every one of those prices includes mobile fitting at your Birmingham address. There is no separate fitting charge and no call-out fee.
Do you come to my home to fit it?
Yes. LockCar fitting is fully mobile across every Birmingham B postcode and the wider West Midlands. Home, workplace, or anywhere you can leave the car parked safely while we work.
How long does the fitting take?
A few hours, depending on the complexity of the vehicle and how much trim has to come apart to route the wiring out of sight. That includes pairing your TAG and setting up the app. We tell you the expected window when we confirm the booking, not on the day.
Does key cloning protection work on keyless cars?
Yes, and those are the vehicles it is built for. If your car unlocks as you walk up to it, it is the type most exposed to relay attack, because the whole attack depends on extending a signal your car is already listening for.
Do the IC3262 and CAN-IMMO include GPS tracking or a camera?
No. Both are immobilisers only, with no GPS, no 4G and no camera. If you want tracking and live camera view in the same unit, that is the LockCar One Plus at £699, or another system from the 4G dashcam range.
Does the One Plus need a subscription?
The unit works without one. A subscription is optional and is only needed if you want remote access, real-time notifications, live camera viewing and cloud storage. Local functions continue to work either way.
What does the 12 month warranty cover?
The 12 month warranty covers the LockCar hardware itself. If the unit fails within that period we replace it. Full terms are set out in our terms and conditions.
Will an aftermarket immobiliser affect my manufacturer’s warranty?
Terms vary between manufacturers. If your vehicle is still under warranty it is worth a quick call to your dealer before you book, and we will tell you exactly what we intend to connect to so you can ask a specific question rather than a general one.
What happens if my car battery goes flat?
Nothing is lost. Once power is restored the system behaves exactly as before, with the same paired TAG and the same settings.
What if I lose the TAG?
Keep a spare at home. On the CAN-IMMO you can also disarm from the smartphone app over Bluetooth, and on the IC3262 a paired trust device such as a smart watch or smart ring can act as your authorisation.
Can I move a LockCar immobiliser to my next car?
Yes. LockCar units are reprogrammable for another vehicle. Removal and refitting is charged separately and depends on both vehicles, so ask when you book and we will price it up front.
Do you fit immobilisers to vans, HGVs and motorhomes?
Yes. All LockCar units support 12V and 24V installation and cover cars, vans, HGVs, electric vehicles, motorhomes and plant. Vans are among the most common jobs we do in Birmingham.
Do you have a workshop I can bring the car to?
No. LockCar is a mobile-only service and every installation happens at your address. Our registered office is administrative and is not open to customers, so please do not turn up there with a vehicle.
What are your opening hours?
Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00. We are closed on Sundays. Messages sent outside those hours are answered the next working morning.
