Your car starts because one signal says the key is present. Relay it, clone it, and the car obeys. A CAN bus immobiliser adds a second condition the thief cannot supply.

Every car sold in the UK since the mid-2000s runs on a CAN bus — the network your engine, gearbox, ABS and body control units use to talk to each other. A CAN bus immobiliser joins that network and holds the start condition until it recognises you. The key alone is no longer enough, which is why the method works across cars, vans, EVs, hybrids and HGVs rather than only on specific models.

Keyless owners specifically: a relay attack takes under a minute, needs no key and leaves no damage — which is why most stolen keyless cars show no sign of a break-in. The factory immobiliser can’t help, because as far as it can tell the correct key answered. CAN-IMMO adds the check that a relayed signal can’t pass.

What a CAN system can and can’t do

To be straight with you: no immobiliser makes a vehicle theft-proof. A determined crew with a low-loader can take any car, whatever is fitted to it. What a properly installed CAN bus immobiliser does is remove the fast, silent, keyless method behind the majority of UK vehicle theft — and force the slow, loud, visible alternative instead. Two other things worth checking with any installer, ours included: that the firmware carries a profile validated for your exact make, model and year, and that the module follows the vehicle’s own sleep state so it doesn’t flatten the battery. If there’s no validated profile for your vehicle — a classic, an import, a conversion — we’ll say so and fit the standalone IC3ST instead.
