Every modern car runs on a CAN bus. A CAN bus immobiliser uses that same network to decide whether the engine is allowed to start. Here’s what that means in practice, and what separates a well-engineered system from a cheap one.
Keyless entry made cars easier to steal. A relay attack takes seconds, needs no key, and leaves no damage. The response from the aftermarket has been the CAN bus immobiliser: a small module that sits on the car’s own data network and refuses to let the engine start until it recognises the driver.
This article is for the buyer who has already worked out that they need something beyond the factory system, and now wants to understand what they’re actually buying — how the technology works, where the engineering quality shows up, and which questions to ask an installer before anyone touches the car.
What the CAN bus is, in plain English
- What it is: Controller Area Network — a two-wire network that every module in the car uses to talk to every other module
- Who’s on it: engine management, gearbox, ABS, airbags, body control, instrument cluster, immobiliser, infotainment
- Since when: effectively every car sold in the UK since the mid-2000s; mandatory for diagnostics on modern vehicles
- How it works: modules broadcast short messages; each one listens for the messages it cares about and ignores the rest
- Why security uses it: a module on the bus can see the start request and authorisation state without cutting into the loom
- Why thieves target it: a car that trusts every message on its own network will believe a forged one — the basis of CAN injection attacks
Think of the CAN bus as an internal group chat. When you press the start button, the body control module announces it. The immobiliser confirms the key is authorised. The engine ECU sees both messages and fuels the engine. Nothing physical needs to move between those modules — it’s all conversation.
That’s the opportunity and the risk in one sentence. A well-designed security module joins the conversation to add a second authorisation step that a thief can’t supply. A badly-designed one talks over everything else and confuses the modules that were there first.
Where the module sits
The CAN bus links every control unit in the car. A security module joins that network and adds one more condition before the engine is allowed to start.
How a CAN bus immobiliser stops a keyless theft
A relay attack works by extending your key’s signal from inside the house to the car on the drive. The car believes the key is present, unlocks, and starts. Nothing is forced and nothing is broken. The factory immobiliser is satisfied because, as far as it can tell, the correct key answered.
A CAN bus immobiliser breaks that chain by adding an authorisation step the relayed key can’t complete.
When the vehicle is locked, the LockCar CAN-IMMO puts the start sequence into a blocked state. The doors may open, the dash may light up, the key may be relayed successfully — none of that is enough. The condition the engine ECU needs in order to run is not present.
Nothing visible changes. There’s no siren, no flashing LED, no bolt-on box under the dash for a thief to find and rip out. From outside the car, the vehicle looks entirely normal until the moment it refuses to move.
CAN-IMMO releases on a second, independent credential: a proximity tag in your pocket, the LockCar app on your phone, or a paired smartwatch or smart ring. The tag talks to the module directly — it is not part of the keyless system, so relaying the car key does nothing to it.
In daily use you don’t do anything. You walk up carrying the tag, the module recognises it, the block lifts, and the car starts the way it always did. No sequence to memorise, no PIN to teach a partner, no lockout if someone gets it wrong.
Most security products fail because someone didn’t switch them on. CAN-IMMO re-arms automatically when the tag leaves range, and can be set to arm on a schedule — overnight, or during working hours if the vehicle sits on a site all day.
Add the 4G option and you get the rest: remote immobilisation from the app, GPS position, movement alerts, and valet mode for garage visits. Protection that only works when you remember to enable it isn’t protection.

Three things to check before you buy any CAN system
CAN bus immobilisers are not all the same, and the differences don’t show up in the first week. These are the three questions worth asking any installer, about any brand — ours included.
CAN message formats are manufacturer-specific and often model-year-specific. A generic module that guesses at message IDs can trigger dashboard warnings, diagnostic fault codes, or intermittent no-start conditions on vehicles it was never validated against.
What we do: CAN-IMMO ships with a vehicle profile matched to your make, model and year, and Victor validates the fit on the car before the job is signed off. If there’s no validated profile for your vehicle, we say so and fit a standalone LockCar unit instead — which is why the IC3ST exists.
The single most common complaint about aftermarket electronics is a flat battery. A module that keeps the bus awake, or that keeps polling after the car has shut down, will drain a healthy battery over a week of standing.
What we do: CAN-IMMO follows the vehicle’s own sleep state and drops to a low-power listening mode. Quiescent draw is measured on the bench and checked again after installation, so you get a number rather than a promise. If you leave a car parked for long periods, tell us — it changes what we recommend.
This matters for warranty conversations, for selling the car, and for any main-dealer diagnostic work. An installation that cuts and splices into the loom is difficult to undo and easy for a dealer to point at.

An honest limit: no immobiliser makes a vehicle theft-proof. A determined thief with a low-loader can take any car, whatever is fitted to it. What a well-installed immobiliser does is remove the fast, quiet, keyless method that accounts for the majority of UK vehicle theft — and make the alternative slow, loud and visible. Anyone promising more than that is selling you something.

The factory system asks one question: is a valid key signal present? Every keyless theft method is an answer to that question. The bottom line
Keyless theft succeeds because the car asks one question and the thief has learned how to answer it. Everything else — the trackers, the wheel locks, the security lighting — deals with what happens after that answer works.
A CAN bus immobiliser changes the question. Done well, it costs you nothing in daily use: you carry a tag, you walk up, the car starts. Done badly, it costs you warning lights and flat batteries.
