Cat 5 tracker for Range Rover, why you need one and what it does not cover
Thatcham Category 5 tracking systems with driver recognition are now required or strongly recommended by many UK insurers for Range Rover models. Cat 5 provides excellent stolen vehicle recovery capability. But a tracker alone does not prevent relay theft. LockCar explains what Cat 5 covers, what it does not, and why a hardwired relay immobiliser is the essential partner to any tracker fitted to a Range Rover.

What is a Thatcham Category 5 tracker?
Thatcham Category 5 is the highest rating for vehicle tracking and recovery systems. A Cat 5 system includes GPS tracking, national monitoring centre subscription (typically 24/7 staffed), driver recognition using a personal identification tag that the driver must present when entering the vehicle, immobilisation capability via a signal from the monitoring centre, and police liaison for stolen vehicle recovery.
The driver recognition element is what distinguishes Cat 5 from lower categories. If a vehicle is moved without the correct driver tag being presented, the monitoring centre is automatically alerted and begins a recovery operation. This provides a meaningful layer of protection against relay attack because even if the vehicle starts and moves, the absence of the correct driver tag triggers an immediate response.
Many UK specialist insurers for Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, and other high-value models now require Cat 5 tracking as a condition of cover in certain postcodes. Premiums for Range Rover owners in the West Midlands, London, and South East without Cat 5 or equivalent may be unaffordable or unavailable from some insurers.
What Cat 5 does not prevent
Cat 5 trackers are recovery systems. They improve the probability and speed of recovering a stolen vehicle. They do not physically prevent the vehicle from being started or driven away. A Range Rover that is relay-attacked will start, drive off, and trigger a Cat 5 alert to the monitoring centre. By the time that alert is processed and police are dispatched, the vehicle may be 20 to 30 miles away and approaching a chop shop or a container facility.
Experienced theft gangs that specifically target Range Rovers are aware of Cat 5 systems. Tracker detection equipment, Faraday containers, and counter-surveillance techniques are used to reduce recovery rates even on Cat 5-tracked vehicles. Recovery is not guaranteed even with Cat 5 monitoring.
A LockCar hardwired relay immobiliser prevents the Range Rover from starting in the first place, making the Cat 5 recovery sequence unnecessary. The two systems are complementary: LockCar prevents theft, Cat 5 recovers if theft still occurs via tow-away or other non-start methods.
LockCar as the prevention layer alongside Cat 5
For Range Rover owners who already have or are fitting a Cat 5 tracker, LockCar’s relay immobiliser provides the prevention layer that Cat 5 cannot. The combination addresses every realistic theft scenario: relay attack is stopped by the LockCar relay break; tow-away is addressed by the Cat 5 GPS tracking and monitoring centre. Together, the two systems provide the most comprehensive security available for a Range Rover in the UK.
LockCar installation is compatible with all Cat 5 tracker installations and does not interfere with any monitoring system hardware. Both systems can be fitted in the same appointment if the Cat 5 tracker is being installed simultaneously, or LockCar can be retrofitted to a vehicle that already has a Cat 5 system.
