Best dash cam for taxis in the UK 2025, licensing compliant with immobiliser built in
The best taxi dashcam does more than record the road. It captures passenger interactions, meets licensing authority camera requirements, integrates with a relay immobiliser to protect the vehicle overnight, and connects to a fleet management platform for operators managing multiple licensed vehicles. LockCar Duo RH and Duo RH Plus were designed with the UK taxi and private hire market specifically in mind.

What licensing authorities require from taxi cameras
An increasing number of UK licensing authorities require or strongly recommend in-vehicle cameras for licensed taxis and private hire vehicles. Requirements vary by authority but commonly specify forward-facing external coverage and interior coverage of the passenger compartment. TfL guidance for London PHVs references camera systems as part of safe working practice. Many councils outside London are moving toward similar requirements.
LockCar Duo RH and Duo RH Plus provide simultaneous front-facing and driver-facing coverage that meets or exceeds these specifications. Contact your local licensing authority to confirm their specific camera requirements before installation.
Passenger safety and evidence capture
Interior camera footage from a taxi dashcam provides evidence for any dispute between driver and passenger, supports complaints investigations by licensing authorities, and creates a deterrent against anti-social behaviour and verbal abuse in the vehicle. For drivers working late nights in high-risk areas, the visible presence of an interior camera provides a degree of personal safety deterrence.
All camera footage is stored on local SD and, on 4G models, uploaded to the LockCar cloud server. Data access is restricted to the vehicle operator and, where legally required, licensing and law enforcement authorities. UK GDPR requires that passengers be notified of CCTV operation, typically via a visible notice in the vehicle.
Overnight vehicle protection
Licensed taxis and PHVs parked overnight in urban areas face the same relay theft risk as any premium vehicle. The relay immobiliser integrated into all LockCar Duo systems protects the vehicle when parked, regardless of where it is left after a late shift. The 4G GPS in the Duo RH Plus provides movement alerts if the vehicle is moved unexpectedly, and remote immobilisation via the app if theft is in progress.
