10 Essential Car Maintenance Tips for Beginners
Keep your car safe, reliable, and secure with these simple checks every driver should know.

For new drivers, car maintenance can feel overwhelming. But regular checks take just minutes and can prevent breakdowns, save money, and keep you safe on the road. From tyre pressure to oil levels — and yes, vehicle security — here are 10 essential tips every UK driver should know. And because prevention is better than cure, we’ll also show you how LockCar immobilisers protect your car when maintenance isn’t enough.
1. Check tyre pressure monthly
Under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption, reduce grip, and wear faster. Check pressure when tyres are cold (before driving). The correct PSI is listed in your owner’s manual or on the driver’s door pillar. Use the penny test for tread depth: insert a penny upside down into the tread — if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread is below 2/32″ and tyres need replacing.
2–4. Engine oil, coolant & screenwash
Check oil level monthly using the dipstick. Low or dirty oil damages engines. Coolant (antifreeze) prevents overheating — check when engine is cold. Screenwash is cheap but critical for visibility; top up regularly. All three are easy DIY checks that prevent expensive garage visits.
5. Battery care
Car batteries last 3–5 years. If your engine cranks slowly or lights dim, have the battery tested. Clean corroded terminals with a wire brush. If you don’t drive often, a battery maintainer prevents deep discharge. Modern cars with many electronics are particularly sensitive to weak batteries.
Don’t ignore dashboard warning lights. The check engine light, battery light, or oil pressure warning all need immediate attention. A £50 sensor replacement today can prevent a £2,000 repair next month.
9–10. Security as maintenance
Two often-overlooked aspects of car maintenance are key security and immobiliser function. Keyless entry cars are vulnerable to relay attacks — thieves amplify your key’s signal from inside your house to open and start your car. A faraday pouch (signal-blocking) costs £10 and protects your key when at home. But for true security, a physical relay immobiliser like LockCar adds a layer that no electronic amplifier can defeat.

Maintenance & security FAQs for new drivers
How often should I check my oil?
At least once a month, and before long journeys. If your car has a digital oil level display, check it weekly via the infotainment system.
Do I really need an immobiliser if my car has a factory alarm?
Factory immobilisers communicate with your key via radio signal — they can be bypassed by relay amplifiers. A LockCar immobiliser adds a physical relay break that cannot be defeated electronically. Two layers are always better than one.
Can I fit an immobiliser myself?
We recommend professional installation to ensure correct wiring and reliability. LockCar offers mobile fitting across the UK, including at your home or workplace.
