Toyota Hilux & Land Cruiser theft UK — how to stop it
Toyota vehicles have seen the sharpest increase in theft rates of any mainstream brand in the UK over the past two years. The Hilux, Land Cruiser, and RAV4 are now among the most stolen models nationally. CAN bus injection attacks specifically targeting Toyota’s Smart Entry system are rising at record rates. LockCar’s hardwired immobiliser provides the physical defence Toyota’s factory security cannot.

Toyota’s reputation for reliability and durability has created an unintended consequence in the UK vehicle crime landscape: stolen Toyota vehicles — particularly the Hilux pickup and Land Cruiser SUV — retain their value exceptionally well in both domestic and export secondary markets. West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner data for 2024 showed Toyota among the brands with the largest percentage increase in theft rate compared to the prior year. LockCar manufactures relay and CAN bus immobilisers compatible with all current Toyota platforms, providing a physical layer of protection that Toyota’s own systems are not designed to supply.
Toyota theft — the rising trend
Toyota thefts in the UK rose significantly in 2023 and 2024. The 2025 West Midlands PCC vehicle crime data specifically named Toyota among the brands seeing the largest increases in theft rate. This trend mirrors patterns seen in other English-speaking markets — particularly Australia, where Hilux and Land Cruiser thefts rose sharply several years before the UK trend emerged, providing an early indicator of the criminal supply chain developing around Toyota platforms.
The rise is driven by several factors: growing UK Hilux and Land Cruiser registration numbers, the development of CAN bus injection tools specifically targeting Toyota’s ECU architecture, strong export demand for Toyota platforms in West Africa and the Middle East, and the Hilux’s dominance in the agricultural and construction sectors — creating a large pool of vehicles parked in less monitored rural and semi-rural locations.
Toyota RAV4 thefts have also risen sharply, following a pattern established in Canada and the United States where RAV4 theft became epidemic before spreading to European markets. The common thread across all three models — Hilux, Land Cruiser, and RAV4 — is the Smart Entry keyless system and the vulnerability of Toyota’s specific key programming architecture to CAN bus injection tools available on criminal markets.
Why the Hilux is a prime target
The Toyota Hilux is the UK’s best-selling pickup truck and one of the most recognised commercial vehicles in the agricultural, construction, and utility sectors. Its combination of high resale value, genuine off-road capability, and global market penetration makes it a priority target for export theft rings. A Hilux stolen in the UK’s West Midlands or Home Counties can be containerised and shipped to buyers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, or Eastern Europe within days of the theft, with minimal traceability once it leaves UK ports.
The Hilux’s typical operating environment — farms, building sites, rural business premises — also creates risk factors that differ from urban residential theft. Rural properties may be isolated, with lower ANPR and CCTV coverage, providing theft gangs with more time and less exposure than in urban areas. The Hilux’s high ride height and visibility mean it can be spotted from a distance by gangs conducting surveillance runs in rural areas.
Newer Hilux models with Smart Entry are the primary targets, but older models remain vulnerable to different attack methods. Traditional hot-wiring techniques and physical ignition attacks are more commonly used on pre-Smart Entry Hilux variants. LockCar immobilisers are effective against both categories of attack.
Toyota Smart Entry — the vulnerability
Toyota Smart Entry uses passive keyless entry in essentially the same architecture as all other keyless systems — a continuous challenge signal from the vehicle, responded to by the key fob when it comes within range. Relay attack equipment extends the effective range of this handshake, allowing the vehicle to be unlocked and started with the key fob remaining inside a property.
The additional vulnerability specific to some Toyota platforms is the relative accessibility of their OBD port architecture for key programming. Criminal networks have developed specific tools targeting Toyota ECU platforms that can programme blank key fobs to valid configurations without the original key being present. This CAN bus injection approach has been particularly well-documented in Toyota RAV4 thefts, where gangs accessed the OBD port or headlight wiring to execute rapid key programming attacks.
West Midlands Police specifically named Toyota as one of the brands with the largest percentage theft increase in 2024. CAN bus injection tools targeting Toyota ECU platforms are now circulating in criminal networks across all major UK urban areas. Owners of Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser, and RAV4 are advised to fit aftermarket hardwired immobilisers as a priority.
How Toyota vehicles are stolen in the UK
Toyota thefts in the UK use a combination of relay attack on Smart Entry models and OBD-based key programming on both Smart Entry and conventional key models. Relay attacks follow the standard two-person, two-device pattern and are used primarily for overnight driveway thefts of RAV4, Land Cruiser, and newer Hilux models. OBD attacks involve either breaking a window to access the interior OBD port, or accessing the headlight-to-CAN-bus wiring through the headlight housing.
In agricultural and rural settings, Hilux thefts are sometimes conducted during working hours — particularly in remote areas where the keys are left in the vehicle while the owner is working nearby. In these situations, neither relay attack nor OBD programming is necessary; physical key theft or simple hot-wiring of older models suffices. LockCar’s anti-hijack mode addresses this scenario specifically, allowing the immobiliser to re-arm automatically after a configurable time period even if the engine has been started with a valid key.
LockCar for Toyota — the solution
LockCar immobilisers are fully compatible with all current and recent Toyota platforms including the Hilux GR Sport, Hilux Invincible, Land Cruiser 300 series, RAV4 PHEV, and the Prado range. The i226 is the recommended unit for Hilux and Land Cruiser applications due to its 20A relay rating, which handles the higher-current starter circuits in Toyota’s diesel-engine commercial platforms. For personal Toyota SUVs, the IC3ST provides a standalone dual-factor solution.
LockCar’s installation for Toyota vehicles specifically addresses both relay attack and OBD key programming vulnerabilities. The hardwired relay break is positioned downstream of the OBD port access point — even a successful OBD key programming attack that creates a valid key will be defeated by the physical relay in the start circuit. No key, real or cloned, can start the engine without the LockCar authentication completing first.
LockCar Toyota immobiliser range
Will a LockCar immobiliser interfere with my Toyota’s Smart Entry?
No. LockCar installation does not affect Smart Entry door locking or any Toyota electronics. You continue to use Smart Entry for door access exactly as before. The only difference is that the engine will not start without LockCar authentication — which with the IC3ST happens automatically via your proximity tag.
I use my Hilux on a farm — can the immobiliser be set to disarm automatically during working hours?
Yes. LockCar systems support configurable disarm schedules and hands-free operation modes. Contact us when booking to discuss the configuration most appropriate for your operating environment. Anti-hijack mode can also be configured to re-arm after a set period, protecting vehicles left unattended in the field.
Can LockCar protect my older Hilux without keyless entry?
Yes. LockCar works on any vehicle with a 12V or 24V electrical system, regardless of whether it has keyless entry. The relay break integrates with the ignition circuit directly. Pre-Smart Entry Hilux models, including the Mk7 and earlier, are fully supported.
