Best immobiliser for BMW UK 2025
BMW models — from the 3 Series to the X5 and M Series — are consistently among the UK’s most targeted vehicles for relay attack and CAN bus theft. BMW’s sophisticated Comfort Access keyless entry system is the exact vulnerability criminals exploit. LockCar’s hardwired immobiliser provides a physical defence that BMW’s factory security cannot deliver on its own.

BMW Comfort Access, introduced across the BMW range from the mid-2000s and now standard on almost all new BMW models, provides keyless entry and push-button start via passive radio-frequency communication between the vehicle and the key fob. It is a sophisticated, convenient system — and it is precisely as vulnerable to relay attack as every other passive keyless entry system in production today. LockCar provides UK BMW owners with a physical relay break in the start circuit that Comfort Access cannot override, independently manufactured and installed at your home or workplace.
Why BMW models are relay theft targets
BMW models appear in vehicle theft statistics both because of their high unit values and because of the strong demand for BMW parts in the UK and European aftermarket. A stolen BMW 5 Series or X5 can be worth more dismantled than sold as a complete vehicle, creating a consistent economic incentive for organised theft gangs to target the brand specifically. Police operations across the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and London have repeatedly found BMW parts — particularly engines, gearboxes, and electronic modules — at chop shop operations alongside Land Rover and Toyota parts.
BMW’s increasing presence in the premium SUV segment — with the X3, X5, X6, and X7 all now featuring Comfort Access as standard — means the pool of high-value, keyless BMW targets has grown substantially over the past decade. The combination of SUV body style, high value, and passive keyless entry makes these models particularly attractive to organised theft rings targeting multiple postcodes in a single night.
In the West Midlands specifically, BMW thefts increased year-on-year in 2024 data. The B postcodes of Birmingham — particularly B8, B10, B11, B18, and B23 — are identified as high-risk areas for BMW relay attack. Access to the M6 and A38 enables stolen vehicles to be moved rapidly from residential streets to storage or export facilities.
BMW Comfort Access — the vulnerability explained
BMW Comfort Access works by having the vehicle continuously broadcast a challenge signal on a frequency of approximately 125kHz. When the key fob enters the vehicle’s detection zone — typically one metre — it responds on a 433MHz or 868MHz frequency with an encrypted rolling code, and the vehicle unlocks. Push-button start completes the authentication and starts the engine.
Relay attack equipment amplifies the 125kHz challenge signal from inside a property — through walls, floors, and doors — to the key fob wherever it is located. The amplified signal enables the key fob to receive the challenge and send its response, even from 20 metres away. The vehicle receives a valid encrypted response and unlocks exactly as it would if the key were present normally.
BMW has implemented some countermeasures in newer models, including reducing key fob broadcast power and implementing motion-sensing standby modes that deactivate the fob when it has been stationary for a period. These measures increase the difficulty of relay attack but do not eliminate it — determined gangs with more powerful relay equipment or who observe when a BMW key fob enters motion standby mode can work around these mitigations.
Most stolen BMW models in the UK
The BMW 3 Series remains the single most targeted BMW model by volume, reflecting its large installed base and strong parts demand. The 5 Series, particularly the F10 and G30 generations, follows closely. The X5 and X6 SUVs attract the highest theft rate per registered vehicle among BMW models due to their elevated value. M Series variants command premium prices in the stolen parts market, with M3, M4, and M5 engines and gearboxes in particularly high demand.
Electric and plug-in hybrid BMW models — including the i4, iX, and 330e — are an emerging theft target as their residual values remain high and charging infrastructure creates new locations where vehicles are left unattended for extended periods. Public charging points in supermarket car parks, workplace parking areas, and on-street charging bays represent a relatively new risk environment for BMW EV owners.
BMW Comfort Access key fob motion standby mode — which reduces the fob’s broadcast power when stationary — can be defeated by gangs who observe the fob entering standby and then deliberately trigger motion (vibration, sound) near the property to reactivate it before performing the relay attack.
LockCar for BMW — how it works
LockCar’s immobiliser systems are compatible with all BMW models equipped with Comfort Access, including the full current G-generation range (G20 3 Series, G30/G60 5 Series, G05/G07 X5/X7) and previous F-generation models. The installation integrates with the start circuit at a point that is independent of the Comfort Access system — the relay break is positioned downstream of the ECU’s start authorisation signal, meaning it cannot be bypassed by any electronic manipulation of the Comfort Access architecture.
BMW’s iDrive system and associated electronics are particularly sensitive to electrical interference. LockCar engineers use BMW-specific wiring procedures and connectors that avoid any interference with the vehicle’s CAN bus or iDrive communications. The installation is fully reversible and does not affect any BMW coding, software function, or warranty-related system.

Will LockCar installation affect my BMW’s iDrive or ConnectedDrive?
No. LockCar engineers install at the start circuit level using BMW-compatible wiring methods. The installation does not touch or interfere with the iDrive, ConnectedDrive, or any other BMW software system. All iDrive functions, BMW apps, and Connected features continue to work exactly as before.
Does LockCar work with BMW Comfort Access if I use the key fob normally?
Yes. With a LockCar immobiliser fitted, you continue to use your BMW key fob exactly as normal to unlock the doors. The only change is that the engine will not start without the additional LockCar authentication — which, with the IC3ST model, happens automatically via your proximity tag in your pocket. The experience for a legitimate driver is seamless.
My BMW has a factory ghost immobiliser option — is that enough?
BMW does not currently offer a factory ghost immobiliser as standard. Some BMW owners have had CAN bus-based aftermarket ghost immobilisers fitted. These provide protection against basic relay attacks but can be vulnerable to advanced CAN bus injection. LockCar’s hardwired relay break operates outside the CAN bus and provides complementary, non-overlapping protection.
