Ghost immobiliser alternative — what to buy instead and why
Ghost is the UK’s best-known immobiliser. It’s not necessarily the best one for your car. Here’s the honest comparison — and the relay alternative that costs less and risks less.
Ghost became the dominant aftermarket immobiliser in the UK by being genuinely innovative when it launched. The CAN bus approach was new, invisible, and clever. But the market has moved on — and the problems that CAN bus installation creates have become well-documented. Here is the case for the relay alternative.
What Ghost gets right
It would be dishonest not to acknowledge Ghost’s strengths. Ghost has a large, well-trained installer network across the UK. It has Thatcham approval — which some insurers specifically require. It has years of real-world theft prevention evidence. The PIN sequence, while frustrating, does mean there is no physical tag to carry or lose. For owners whose insurers specifically require Thatcham approval, Ghost remains the correct choice.
What Ghost gets wrong
CAN bus ECU interference — documented, not theoretical
UK forum threads from BMW, Audi, and Volvo owners document ECU faults appearing after Ghost installation. The installer-manufacturer split means there’s often no clear accountability. The issue doesn’t occur on every vehicle — but it occurs on enough that it cannot be dismissed.
BMW warranty explicitly voided
BMW has confirmed that connecting any CAN bus device to the iDrive network voids manufacturer warranty. For a BMW in warranty, Ghost is a £500 investment that could cost significantly more if a fault occurs and BMW declines to honour the warranty claim.
PIN sequence usability problems
The PIN must be entered using existing dashboard buttons in a specific sequence every time the car is started. New drivers, partners, valets, and mechanics all need to know the sequence. Lockout occurs if the sequence is entered incorrectly too many times — requiring a specialist callout.
No GPS, no app, no remote features
Ghost’s core product has no GPS tracking, no app, no motion alerts, no remote immobilisation. These are separate products. The relay alternatives from LockCar include all of this — particularly relevant when comparing the ONE Plus to Ghost on a total cost of ownership basis.
