Car theft in the West Midlands is not random. It is organised.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the West Midlands currently has the second highest vehicle theft rate in England, with 11.1 recorded thefts per 1,000 people. Only London is higher. Birmingham itself consistently features among the UK’s most affected cities, with vehicle crime running at around 161% of the national average, according to figures published in 2025.
What makes this so difficult to deal with is that most modern thefts do not involve broken windows or triggered alarms. Thieves use relay attack devices that pick up your key fob signal from inside your house, trick your car into thinking the key is right there, and drive away in under 60 seconds. No noise. No damage. Just gone.
In 2025, an estimated 60,900 cars were stolen across the UK, based on DVLA data compiled from police forces. That works out at roughly one car stolen every 10 minutes. Organised groups operate specifically across Birmingham and Solihull. Last year, West Midlands Police convicted a gang for stealing more than 40 vehicles in a single operation, coordinating over social media and staking out targets with CCTV.
If you own a BMW, Range Rover, Mercedes, Ford Focus, or Volkswagen Golf in Birmingham, you are among the highest-risk vehicle owners in the country. These models appear repeatedly in West Midlands theft records and on national most-stolen lists year after year.
A relay attack cannot get past a physical immobiliser. When your engine circuit is cut at the relay level, completely separate from your key fob and your car’s computer, there is nothing for a relay device to work with. The car simply will not start.

Your car’s built-in security was not designed for what thieves are doing today.
Car manufacturers design factory immobilisers to stop traditional hot-wiring. They were not built to handle relay attacks. When a relay device amplifies your key fob signal, your car’s security system genuinely believes the key is present. It does exactly what it is supposed to do: it unlocks and starts the engine.
An aftermarket immobiliser adds a completely separate layer of protection that has nothing to do with key signals at all. The engine circuit is physically cut at the relay. The car will not start unless the correct proximity tag is within range, or an authorised command comes through the app. No key signal, no bypass.
LockCar uses relay-based technology, which means there is no connection to your car’s CAN bus network. The CAN bus is the electronic communication system that runs your engine management, dashboard instruments, and driver assistance features. Some competing immobiliser products, including well-known CAN bus systems, have caused ECU errors and diagnostic faults on certain vehicles over time. Our system never touches that network. It works independently at the circuit level, with no risk of interfering with anything else on your car.

Not sure which is right for your car? Take the 60-second quiz and get a personalised recommendation. Start the quiz
From your first message to fully fitted, most customers are done the same day.
Tell us about your vehicle
Use the quiz at lockcar.co.uk/quiz or send a WhatsApp. We need two things: what car you drive and where you are in Birmingham. That is all we need to give you an exact quote.
We confirm your quote and book a time
No call centres and no waiting on hold. You hear back from the engineer directly. We agree on a time that suits you, whether that is at home, at work, or anywhere across the West Midlands.
We come to you and fit it
The engineer arrives, fits the system, and does not leave until everything is working perfectly. Most installations take under an hour. You leave with the app set up, the TAG fob paired, and full control of your vehicle’s security.
You have one number to call
The person who built the device is the same person who fitted it. If you ever have a question, you call them directly. No helpline. No chatbot. Just the engineer who knows your system.
“I am not a salesman. I am an engineer. I designed every circuit, wrote every line of code, and I come to your door in Birmingham and install it myself. If anything goes wrong, which it will not, you call me. The person who built it.”
What makes us different from every other option in Birmingham.
No ECU interference
Relay-based, not CAN bus. We never connect to your car’s computer network, so there are no diagnostic errors, no warning lights, and no warranty risk.
One person, start to finish
The engineer who built your device is the engineer who fits it. No middlemen, no subcontractors, and one clear person to contact if you ever need anything.
Designed and built in the UK
Every component chosen and every circuit designed here. Not imported. Not rebranded. Built from scratch by a UK engineer.
Full app control
Check your car, receive alerts, and immobilise remotely from your phone. The ONE Plus adds a live camera feed and GPS tracking on top of that.
No PIN to remember
Your TAG fob disarms the car automatically as you approach. Just walk up and get in. No button sequences, no codes, and no risk of locking yourself out.
Works on any vehicle
Cars, vans, HGVs, EVs, motorhomes, and plant machinery. Any vehicle with a 12V or 24V system is compatible.
Things Birmingham customers ask us most often.
Do you cover all of Birmingham and the West Midlands?
Yes. We offer mobile installation across Birmingham city and the surrounding West Midlands area, including Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, and Wolverhampton. If you are not sure whether we cover your specific area, send us a WhatsApp and we will confirm straight away.
Will fitting an immobiliser affect my car’s warranty?
Because our system is relay-based and never connects to the CAN bus or any part of your vehicle’s electronic network, it sits completely independently of your car’s systems. There is no data interface and no modification to your vehicle’s software or diagnostics. Many customers with active manufacturer warranties have had no issues. If you want to talk through your specific vehicle before booking, we are happy to do that.
How long does installation take?
Most installations are completed in under an hour. Before we leave, we set up the app on your phone, pair the TAG fob, and walk you through how everything works. You drive away fully protected the same day.
What happens if something goes wrong after installation?
You call the same person who fitted it. There is no customer service team and no helpline. The engineer who built and installed your device is your direct contact. That is just how we work.
Can a relay attack bypass a LockCar system?
A relay attack works by amplifying your key fob signal. Our system does not respond to key signals at all. The engine circuit is physically cut at the relay. Even if a thief had your original key and full access to the car, the engine will not start without the correct TAG fob within range or an authorised command through the app. That is the practical difference between a CAN bus system and a physical relay cut.
Is there a subscription required?
The core immobiliser works without any subscription. A subscription is only needed if you want cloud storage, 4G remote access, or live camera through the ONE Plus. The IC3ST and IS357 work fully without one.
